On the edge of the desert is this historic town called Farina. It grew to reach a peak population of approximately 600 in the late 1800s. In its heyday, the town had two hotels (the Transcontinental and the Exchange) and an underground bakery, a bank, two breweries, a general store, an Anglican church, five blacksmiths, a school and a brothel.

Today nothing but stone ruins and the elevated railway water tank remain of the township. The post office closed in the 1960s and the Ghan railway line closed in the 1980s.

In 2008 Farina Restoration Group was formed, and volunteers have restored parts of the town, including the repair of the now operational underground bakery. The bakery is only open for 2 months of the year, as the rest of the year is too hot out here.

Farina had been on my bucket list of places to visit and it sure did not disappoint! Oh and the bakery was pretty yummy too.

Copper was discovered at Nuccaleena by William Finke in the mid 1850’s. After the raising of finances from England, the Nuccaleena Mine became partly operational in early 1860, when 100 tons of copper ore were mined in five weeks by only sixteen men. By March 1861, eighty six men were employed and working at the mine site, including thirty six miners, five masons, four sawyers, two cooks and a medical officer. When these were built over 150 years ago, there was no modern machinery to lift these heavy stones into place.

By 1866, the Nuccaleena Mine had produced only £13,000 worth of copper ore, after the enterprise had expended £57,000 on the enterprise. Soon after, the mine was abandoned and described as an enormous financial failure.

Today these ruins are all that's left out there plus a few dead animals hiding inside the ruins.
You can free camp out here but you must take a 4x4 to get there. It's rough terrain and a long way from any supplies and no nearby towns.

While in Perth, I found the old Midland Railway Workshops. I was lucky enough to be there on a day when this particular building's door was open and found some volunteers inside, lovely guys who share my love of restoration, preservation and history. These shots are from inside the power house which operated the railway workshops. Full of history, slowly being cleaned up for the public to see on display in coming years.

Originally this land was used for prospecting gold, however none was found. Instead they found an abundance of fire-clay which formed the operation of this brick and clay quarry and factory in 1900. It produced bricks to construct multiple government departments, the city gas company, many goldmines, the railway department and the smelter.
