It finally happened, and in the most unexpected way with a photo that I absolutely LOVE!

I just won the "Amateur Photographer of the Year 2024" competition in the Action category, and my photo will be published in an English magazine next month!

The news hit like a gr***de, sending a new wave of adrenaline and a burning desire to keep pushing, learning, and improving straight into my brain. My ultimate goal remains to win the Australian Photographer of the Year, but for now, I’m taking a moment to truly enjoy this achievement. With a few tears of joy and a deeper awareness of my abilities, this is a new starting point, not a finish line.

You can find the description of the photo and the article’s translation in the comments. Follow me on Instagram .

A massive thank you to my partner in crime Stefania Rocca for all the “It’s terrible,” “Overexposed,” “Looks like someone threw up orange on the photo” (she really said this!!), “It’s crooked,” “It’s crap,” “It’s garbage,” “What does it even mean?”, and “It’s awful” comments. I would never have learned to see my photos through different eyes without those brutally honest critiques, and I wouldn’t have had the drive to improve if the reward for a good photo wasn’t seeing your beautiful, amazed eyes as you said, “It’s beautiful, I want it framed here.” You’ve been my inspiration.

And to Emanuele Baldassini, for the support he probably doesn’t even realize he’s given me, but without which I’d be lost right now.

Thank you.

The results of the Action round of our prestigious APOY competition are in! Lorenzo Passalacqua wins the top place with the image 'Avalanche'

I have always been a highly competitive person, finding motivation and excitement in challenges. Even when I know I can't compete for a podium finish, I dive in and often come out better for it. In February of this year, I began selling my aerial photographs, but without success. Despite my sales skills, my photos weren't selling. Demoralized, exhausted, and without a real goal in my life, I was ready to abandon the project. Then in May, I photographed a rock pool in Sydney, the Shelly Beach Rock Pool in Cronulla, and in seeing it, I realized that I had found something to compete for once again. From there, my project "The Ocean's Door" was born. I began to photograph all 34 of Sydney's Rock Pools step by step. The last one was photographed just 10 days ago. People were enthusiastic and began ordering my photos. Every pool, every photo, every time I flew my drone, my shots improved.

The hyper-competitive part of me decided to enter an ambitious photography competition, "Australian Photographer of the Year", which happened in June, just a month after starting this project. Knowing that I couldn't even come close to the beauty of some of the entries, I knew I would be discarded from the start.

Yet, 2023 ends with a certificate. I didn't win. I didn't even come close to the top 10 positions, but my idea and my photos surpassed two drafts, finishing in the top 40.

This is not a finish line to celebrate, but a pat on the back pushing me to do better. A push to believe. A reprimand reminding me that what I CAN DO is FAR SUPERIOR to what I THINK I can do.

In my darkest moments, when there seems to be no light around me, and the desire to act fades, I have two phrases that buzz in my head: "Give a man a purpose, and he will crawl on broken glass with a smile on his face" and "If not us, who? And if not now, when?"

This piece of paper will stay here to remind me that in 2024, my ambition must surpass my talents to become Australian Photographer of the Year 2024. To remind me to smile even if I crawl on broken glass, because in front of me, there's a project I can be proud of and that has a future. To remind me that no one will take a step for me. To remind me to dare, as I have done in the past and it has always worked. To remind me that there is only one right moment: NOW.

THE MAROUBRA'S CUBE.
Initially, the Rubik’s Cube was a huge concrete block that sat on a stormwater drain at the beach.
Two local artists thought that the concrete block deserved a makeover, so one night in 2008, One night, they decided to paint it into the form of a Rubik’s Cube. The huge cube has become a favourite spot for many visitors at the beach, adding vibrant colours to the already beautiful beach!
