They met in high school. Years of ordinary days later, they walked out onto a lawn in Jimbaran with the Indian Ocean behind them and made it official at sunset.

The morning was quiet. Letters to the bride, read slowly. Her mother fixing her dupatta in front of the mirror and losing it completely. On Karina’s wrist, a chain of charms carrying names and small memories, the date hanging at the very end, so that everyone she loves was somehow in the room.

Then the afternoon cracked open. Orange smoke over the frangipani trees, a vintage Mercedes rolling in under the branches, Sid up on shoulders and on the boot of the car, waving at a crowd that had been cheering since the smoke cleared. At the other end her family was already waiting. Her mum stepped forward to welcome the man her daughter chose.

Karina walked in under a chaadar of white flowers with her mom beside her, in Sabyasachi red that caught every last hour of the sun. The phere finished as the light went gold over the water. By the vidaai the whole night was streaking gold behind them.

Karina and Sid, congratulations you two. Thank you for flying us over and trusting us with all four days. Weddings like this are the reason we do this. 

The InterContinental Bali Resort gave us lily ponds, old plumeria trees, Balinese stone lanterns and a lawn that opens straight onto the beach. Very few venues can hold a full Hindu ceremony and a sunset like that in the same frame. Eventures - Indian Wedding Planner in Bali ran the four days so precisely that we always knew where to stand before anyone moved.

Cathedral Rocks was really moody for this one. Evening waves crashed into the rocks the whole time we were shooting Elina and Suraj’s pre wedding.

Elina walked down in her dress with Suraj right behind her, and within minutes they forgot the camera was there. That’s the whole point of these shoots.

Cathedral Rocks keeps surprising. Same spot, but the tide and the light change the whole shoot every time.

Amani and Omar’s wedding is the kind we will be talking about for a while.

Three days with them, mehndi to baraat to walima, and they never once made it feel like work. Baraat was at Le Montage and Omar walked in with that quiet confidence, his sherwani catching the late afternoon light in those courtyards. Amani stepped out in a red lehenga heavy with jhoomar and matha patti, the kind of look that photographs itself.

Walima was at Doltone House and the whole mood shifted, and the way Amani looked at Omar walking towards her told us everything we needed for the film.

Do nain tere, do nain mere. Jab milay tou milkay, chaar hue. That line runs through the whole reel and it just fit them.

Thank you Amani and Omar for having us and for trusting us with your story. This is exactly why we do what we do.

You’re going to blink and the whole thing will be over.

A year of planning. Every decision, every deadline, every late night that got you here. Then the day arrives and it moves so fast that most of it never makes it into your memory.

This is one of twenty five lessons I’m sharing after filming Indian and South Asian weddings around Sydney for fifteen years. The small things that nobody warns you about until the day is already gone.

Save this one. You’ll want it closer to the day.

GEORGE STREET, IN STILLS.

A woman stands where a statue of the Queen has held her seat for over a century. Both belong to the same street. Only one of them is dressed for it today.

The lehenga holds its colour against every grey building behind it. Sandstone on one side, silk on the other. The street holds both.

Confidence brings its own backdrop wherever it goes.

This idea sat with me for years before we finally shot it. An Indian bride walking through Sydney like she belongs there, because she does.

GEORGE STREET.

She steps off the tram. The dupatta catches the wind. She is the only one dressed for a different century. She sits with it the way you sit with something that has always been yours.

The QVB watches from behind its arches. The sandstone remembers the Empire. She remembers something older.

Two cultures separated by ten thousand kilometres. Shivashna carrying both of them on a sunny morning in Sydney, and making it look like the most ordinary thing in the world.

Rajdeep in that gold lehenga and Moneet in the black tux. We walked them around Emerald Lakes and Porto Bellagio with the water flat and grey behind them, and honestly it felt like a proper little film set. That shot by the lamppost with the sea going on forever is one we keep coming back to.

You saw their wedding day in our last post. This was the softer, slower half of it. Golden hour light, quiet streets, the two of them just easy in each other’s company. The kind of couple who make you forget you are working.

Second wedding in this family for us, and every catch up feels like family now. Thank you for having us again.

Vipra and Asutosh gave us a full week in Fiji, and issue 04 of ROLLING is everything that week became.

We watched haldi turn into an ocean swim, still in their turmeric soaked clothes. A helicopter landed right as the sun went down over the palms. Two Fijian warriors led Asutosh down the aisle while the whole crowd waited under the trees. Vipra crossed a stretch of red carpet by the water in a lehenga heavy enough to make an entrance out of on its own.

First Landing Resort Fiji held all of it. Water on two sides, palms doing exactly what palms are meant to do in every single frame.

Huge one to Rasaya world for the bridal outfits, floristaa by mahek | bridal accessories and Vaidaan for the mehndi and haldi jewellery, and Ñēhå Ñātāšhā Prāšād for hair, makeup and henna that survived sea water and fire dancers on the same night.

Vipra Vipra and Asutosh Ash Ramanan, weeks later and we’re still talking about this week in the studio. Thank you for flying us out and trusting us with all of it.
