The original inhabitants of the Parramatta district of Western Sydney, the Burramattagal (from whom the name was derived), were known in the native Dharug language as the ‘People of the Eels’.

Artist Tom Roberts lived awhile in Curlew Camp, the Bohemian bushland campsite in Sirius Cove, Mosman, on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour in the late 19th century. He and his friend Arthur Streeton were a major influence on Australian painting and the spread of the new French avant-garde art movement known as Impressionism.
