Stewart and Fran are farmers.

Their farm 'Quondong' is on Wiradjuri land on the outskirts of Narromine, Western NSW. Their daughter Lauren and sons Jock and Harley all run the farm as a family business.

Quondong and three associated properties total a massive 4,000 hectares and grows cotton, wheat, canola and increasingly chick peas that are exported directly to India.

Since 1905 Stewart's family has worked the land for five generations and have farming down to a fine art. As much as any family can in a land prone to drought, where water is scarce, political and expensive.

Quondong strives for absolute irrigation efficiency via the use of the latest underground drip technology where every drop of water counts and is counted. Crops are harvested via monster tractors driven by computer programs and satellites.

Modern farming ensures that Stew, Fran and the family are also IT managers and scientists but overall the family are pillars of the community and proud to be growing the food that nurtures their fellow Australians (and Indians).

Ben Hall applied his genius into a life-time of creativity. The aesthetic was like a religion to him and imagination the beginning of everything.

Ben's extensive talents enabled him as an architect to design and build homes, paint and exhibit abstract Australian landscapes and build beautifully crafted stringed instruments from the finest woods including violas, viols, classical guitars, lutes, cellos, theorbos, vihuelas, chitterones and more recently a one-off violin for his grand daughter Rosa.

All of this creativity is a portal into Ben’s mind.

Having had multiple heart operations since his early forties, creative remedies worked like medicine for Ben, the next exhibition to paint towards, classical guitar to make, house to renovate.

Ben is survived by Annie Morison, educator and jewellery maker, son Jules, daughter Hannah, step daughter Isa Coello and grand children Rosa, Riley, Camille, Bella and Jared.

Ben would have turned 82 this week.

Camille and her friends are off, on their now annual pilgrimage, to the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras.

They go for the spectacle of course but being millennials they inherently understand the importance of promoting community inclusiveness and are fully aware they are also bearing witness. Even though they think those terms belong to another generation.

They wouldn't miss it and are getting there early to ensure a good view of the parade.

Happy Mardi Gras Sydney.

Rosa turned 23 the same week Donald Trump is elected President. I don't know why that is significant. It just is. Regardless of who is running the free world we head off to Thai Rim Nam on the banks of the Georges River to celebrate. A family selfie, including the lovely John, Rosa's boyfriend, to mark the occasion.

It's a balmy spring Sydney evening, a long way from the American rust belt. In the corner of the restaurant I noticed an increasingly drunk ageing local raising his voice. Openly and unbelievably he was slandering the first Australians and later on in the evening, multiculturalism. The two great pillars of Australian society. Thankfully his fellow diner was vigorously rebutting his prejudices.

Before long he was joined by another emboldened diner, the two of them celebrating the Trump victory.

Happy Birthday Rosa. Welcome to an uncertain future.

Sonia, Jamella and Samira are sisters. They have three bothers, Mustafa, Sam and Jo.

Their dad, Morris, immigrated to Australia in the 1950's and alongside thousands of other migrants toiled on the ground breaking civil engineering Snowy Mountain Scheme.

Their mum, Hosnieh, died whilst the three girls were teenagers growing up in Cooma NSW.

On one voyage to Australia from Lebanon the sisters, unbeknown to them, were smuggling into gastronomically bland Australia rag dolls stuffed with Lebanese thyme. Contraband prepared by their aunties and cousins staying behind in the family village.

On the agricultural banned list at the time Lebanese thyme is the essential ingredient in the making of Zaatar, a Lebanese staple that is mixed with olive oil, spread over loaves of flat bread and toasted. Like Vegemite, you can't move country without it.

The Hassan's, now in their third generation, make up the rich fabric of multi-cultural Australia via a broad range of careers as teachers, writers, librarians, artists, costumiers, IT Managers, accountants and public servants.

Michael rides a large motor bike and goes on long road trips through regional Australia. He writes a blog on his adventures but doesn't have any followers but that's the way he likes it.

Two years ago a sheep ran onto the road whilst Michael was going very fast. Michael thought he was going to die.

The sheep did die and after coming to a screeching halt Michael was thrown from the bike and luckily only broke a few ribs and the bike.

Michael still considers his circa 1994 Mambo shirt the height of surf ware fashion.
