I actually didn't know there was a whole world beneath Naples. About 40 metres or so are huge spaces that were originally dug by the Ancient Greeks for material to build Neapolis in the 4th century BC. Yes carved, when you walk through each space you can see all the markings.

These underground tunnels were later used by the Romans as aqueducts to supply water to the city and there is water still flowing through them now. It was also a bomb shelter amongst other things.

Apparently it was expanded over two and a half millennia and it is a subterranean network that runs for 450 kilometres under the 'modern' Naples.

I only did one tour from the middle of the historical centre but there are a few to choose from. It was a bit rushed and a largish group so if I had the choice a longer tour with smaller group I would have much preferred to get a better experience.

What a contrast though to the busy streets selling nick nacks, the beautiful churches, graffiti, fresh food and hordes of visitors wandering around.

Naples, the real Naples without the influencer fluff or hyped up drama. Its streets are a mix of history, theatre, food, culture, open spaces, busy night life and slow walks. Misunderstood by many who base their judgement on a few streets of the historical centre and don’t explore further.

Someone said Naples was noisy and crazy. I beg to differ.

Visiting Herculaneum Archaeological Park is walking through a Roman town frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The city was founded by the Greeks around the 6th century BC (about 600 BC).

It is roughly the same age as nearby Pompeii Archaeological Park and dates to the period of the Roman Empire.

For perspective, it is younger than the ancient settlements of Matera, much younger than the Great Pyramids of Giza (built over 2,500 years earlier), and slightly younger than the founding of Rome (traditionally 753 BC). It is similar in age to Agrigento, a Greek city founded around 580 BC.

They say pizza was invented in Naples so of course I had to try it. While the hordes queue at the famous places there are other local options who make them just as good and have been around for just as long.

In Naples, the love for Diego Maradona goes far beyond football. I’ve been blown away by the passion, devotion and dedication he receives.

It’s well beyond following a sport.

During his years with SSC Napoli, he inspired the city with extraordinary talent, leading the club to historic successes and giving hope and pride to generations of Neapolitans.

Even decades later, murals, shrines, songs, and stories throughout Naples reflect the deep admiration people feel for him.

For many in Naples, Maradona is not only a football legend but also a symbol of resilience, identity, and the enduring spirit of the city.

Catania, Sicily - you know what, I nearly didn't stay here. I started reading reviews and began looking at other places, but in the end I chose to stay for a few days and I am glad that I did.

After visiting Cefalu, Taormina, Mondello and Palermo, Catania felt a bit more 'real' and down to earth. Yes there were lots of visitors in the main areas but not as many as the other places. The city had this gritty, authentic feel to it and wasn't trying to be too pretty.

As soon as you get into the back streets the locals still shop for their groceries, get their hair cut, go to the post office etc. There are not hordes waiting outside an Insta-famous hot spot instead, if you don't rock up early to the fish market or the panicifo for your bread you miss out on the freshest that is available.

There are Baroque influences, honey coloured hues everywhere, graffiti, lush vines and volcanic stone walkways everywhere, there is even a 'hidden' Roman ampitheatre in plain site on the main street built around with modern homes. History just oozes from its pores as you smell, listen and see the city full of life all hours of the day.

The streets convert from fresh produce farmer markets to bars, outdoor musicians playing and people taking their nightly walks. It is relatively peaceful and calm with plenty of space to walk around, breath and enjoy your time there.

Loads of churches, museums, street art, lush parklands abound with both bus & train connections to nearly anywhere you can think of as well so there is something for everyone.

Now its off to Naples.
