I actually didn't know there was a whole world beneath Naples. About 40 metres or so are huge spaces that were originally dug by the Ancient Greeks for material to build Neapolis in the 4th century BC. Yes carved, when you walk through each space you can see all the markings.
These underground tunnels were later used by the Romans as aqueducts to supply water to the city and there is water still flowing through them now. It was also a bomb shelter amongst other things.
Apparently it was expanded over two and a half millennia and it is a subterranean network that runs for 450 kilometres under the 'modern' Naples.
I only did one tour from the middle of the historical centre but there are a few to choose from. It was a bit rushed and a largish group so if I had the choice a longer tour with smaller group I would have much preferred to get a better experience.
What a contrast though to the busy streets selling nick nacks, the beautiful churches, graffiti, fresh food and hordes of visitors wandering around.
