Early morning light hitting Bondi Icebergs and the Sydney skyline in the distance. A quiet perspective from above before the rest of the city wakes up.

Bondi Icebergs started in 1929 when local lifeguards wanted a way to keep up their swimming fitness through the winter months, turning it into the world's only licensed winter swimming club. To keep their memberships active, members historically had to compete three out of four Sundays for a stretch of five years.

Caught this view from above at Catherine Hill Bay as the sun broke through a heavy layer of clouds right over the ocean. There's always something cool about watching the light catch the water and stretch all the way down to the shore.

On this morning a couple of months ago, it was eerie and calm but a great way to start the weekend. A few people were out for walks around the bay, including a few fellow Western Sydney guys enjoying a morning coffee. I love some of the random interactions I have with others while I'm shooting sunrises.

Although this scene looks quiet, peaceful and remote, it's conveniently close to the city. This heavily rusted hull is at Sawmilers Reserve.

It was a "hopper" barge, meaning it featured opening doors on the bottom of the hull operated by chains. It was towed around the harbour to collect silt, mud, and rock from dredging operations and then carry it out to sea to be dumped. During the 1960s, the barge broke free from its moorings during a storm. It drifted across Berrys Bay and ran aground on the mudflat right against the bank of what is now the reserve. Because it was an old, unpowered workhorse, it wasn’t deemed worth the high cost of salvage. It was simply left behind to the elements.

Later this year, it will be ten years since my wife bought my first SLR camera. In that time, this was one of the best sunrises I've seen, at Mahon Pool in February 2023. Taken with a long exposure of 25 seconds, this smooths out the water and shows cloud movement. The colour from this morning topped it off.

As a Sydneysider, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches and rock pools. This is another one I added to my image collection last year, in Avalon on the Northern Beaches. I always enjoy making the trip up that way, such a chilled vibe and a great way to start the day.

Missing these dramatic views from Lake Wakatipu. It’s hard to believe this was captured more than two years ago during a family trip to Queenstown. The way the setting sun silhouetted The Remarkables and reflected these intense colors across the water was truly unforgettable.
