Happy World Ocean’s Day šŸŒŠšŸ šŸŖøšŸ™šŸ¬šŸŖ¼šŸ¦ˆšŸššŸ«§

On a day like this I like taking a moment to reflect and appreciate what the ocean brings to my life simply by existing. I’m grateful for all the beautiful marine creatures I’ve had the great privilege to encounter, sharing these magical moments with people I deeply care about and for all the lessons the ocean has taught me. One word that summarises how I feel towards the ocean and all the life within it is gratitude.
Every day, I strive to give back to the ocean and help protect our blue planet.

Maybe next time you’re at a beach, lake or river, pick up some rubbish. Bring a reusable water bottle wherever you go, read a book or watch a documentary about the ocean or a specific animal, engage in meaningful conversations and always ask questions and stay curious. šŸ§œā€ā™€ļø

Even though sharks and rays aren’t the targeted species in Sri Lanka, they still get caught in the same nets used for tuna.

Before the Sharks International conference, I attended a workshop organised by BRT where we visited one of Sri Lanka’s biggest fishing landing sites, collected data on the catches and learned more about data processing.

The amount of fish, prawns and crabs caught in just one day was hard to ignore. And the weeklong trips brought in masses of huge tunas, marlins, groupers, different types of rays and sharks. It was my first time seeing a mako shark — both a shortfin and a longfin and a scalloped hammerhead.

Some of the catches, like the shortfin mako, were auctioned off right then and there.

It’s a very complex situation and the fishermen are simply trying to make a living. Nevertheless, it was incredibly hard seeing the animals I care so much about lying there on the ground.

This visit to the landing site left me with questions of how can we find a solution that takes all the stakeholders, especially the sharks, into consideration…

Presenting at this year’s Sharks International conference in Sri Lanka was definitely one of my proudest moments.

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to attend the world’s biggest shark conference and for all the amazing people I’ve met.

One of the common themes that came up during the past week’s presentations and conversations was the need to collaborate which makes me extremely happy to hear because together we’re stronger. Shark conservation is deeply complex because we can’t just make more policies without recognising who they affect and how to implement them. That is why working together, from different perspectives and work fields, is the way to go.

The topic I presented is my life’s work - changing people’s perception of sharks through photography & visual storytelling. I also emphasised how important language is. If we talk about ā€œshark attacksā€ it suggests intention & malice. Whereas if we describe the same event as an ā€œaccidentā€, which it technically is, it’s always an accumulation of different factors that lead to an accident, it creates a different understanding.

Science communication and visual storytelling make people care — and we only protect what we care about.

A shift from fear to understanding is what makes conservation possible. And if fear is learned, it’s something we can reshape.

Thank you .international for giving me the opportunity to share my work and passion and congratulations to the for putting together such an amazing conference!
And thank you & .in.waterland for the photos.

800+ participants, 80+ countries, 600+ presentations — what a week!

Reflecting on Sharks International 2026, I leave with a full heart — inspired by so many passionate people working across shark, ray, and chimaera conservation and grateful for all the new connections and friendships that formed. Sri Lanka’s warm welcome made it all the more special.

Even though there is still so much work to do to protect the animals we love, one thing came up again and again — in the talks, the poster sessions and the conversations over coffee: we need to collaborate and work together. And that is what gives me hope!

Huge thank you to the Blue Resources Team for putting together such an incredible conference!

And thank you Andrew and Sam for creating a wonderful and safe space during the Conservation Leadership workshop.

Hope to see you all again in 4 years in Malaysia for Sharks International 2030! 🦈🩵

I’m really excited to share that I’ll not only be attending .international this year, but also presenting!

I’ll be presenting on Monday afternoon in the Science Communication session, where I’ll be talking about how photography and storytelling can help change the way people see sharks.

Come say hi if you’re there 🦈
