Although I post mostly about photography gear, let’s not forget there’ll be some seriously cool scuba diving equipment on display at the GoDivingShow Sydney this weekend — including quite a few of the bits of kit featured in these photos!

👋 Aside from coming to say hi to us at The Underwater Club/DivePhotoGuide — stand 304, I highly recommend shopping for gear at the following stands:

🤿 MARES - just add water & SSI — stand 530, right next to the main stage.
You’ll be able to check out some of the latest masks, fins and dive computers — and, if you’ve ever been curious about rebreathers, this is a great opportunity to try the Mares Horizon SCR in the pool (Saturday afternoon).

I highly, highly recommend giving it a go if you can. Breathing through a rebreather is a very different experience from open circuit, and the Horizon is, in my opinion, the easiest rebreathers to learn on — as well as being easy to travel with.

A big thank you as well to Mares for their continued support over the years. We’ve been very lucky to rely on their gear on so many dives and trips. If you have any questions about the Horizon or any of the other Mares equipment I use, come and ask me!

🐠 On your way to the food stalls, make sure you also stop by Benni Marine Designs — stand 114. Benni is a Tasmanian-based artist creating marine-inspired dive wear using patterns developed from her own underwater photography.

The headbands Lena and Alex are wearing in these photos are some of her creations. Ladies: great for keeping your hair under control. Boys: also very useful for protecting that increasingly exposed forehead from the sun… 😄

And for the underwater photographers: DivePhotoGuide has just published my review of the Nauticam T7 monitor. If you’d like to see the actual rig I used during the review, head over to Scubapix - Nauticam Australia — stand 228. My housing and T7 monitor will be on display there.

See you at the Go Diving Show this weekend!

Last month, I had the pleasure of spending a day diving with photographer and explorer Ram Yoro, as we were both judging the Dive Dauin photo competition.

A big thank you to Silver Reef Dive Resort for hosting us, and to Azure Dive Resort for lending us one of their speedboats so we could spend the day exploring whichever dive sites caught our fancy.

Although Dauin is world-renowned for its macro critters, Ram and I both packed our fisheye lenses and dedicated the day to wide-angle photography instead. With such a healthy population of green turtles, we certainly weren’t short of willing models!

These two images show the same turtle, photographed by each of us at about the same time:

📸 Image 1: Ram’s — shot with a Nikon Z8 + Nikon 8–15mm fisheye in an Isotta housing.
📸 Image 2: Mine — shot with a Canon R5 Mark II + Canon RF 7–14mm fisheye in a Nauticam housing.

The eagle-eyed among you may also notice that we’re both using external monitors to compose our shots. They’ve been popular with underwater videographers for years, but how good are they for still photography?

I’ve just published a new article on The Underwater Club blog where I share my experience, along with the pros and cons I’ve found after using one for the past 6 months.

Thanks for the great day (and the behind-the-scenes photo!), Ram. Looking forward to sharing another dive with you soon.

This leafy scorpionfish is one of the many photogenic critters living in Dauin’s rich waters.

We’ve been having a fantastic time diving with Silver Reef Dive Resort, who are as passionate about underwater photography as we are.

I’ll be back in June 2027 with a small group of photographers for another workshop in Dauin. If you’d like to hear about it when dates are announced, send me a DM — bookings will open to members of first.

A moray eel devours an unfortunate mantis shrimp.

The attack lasted only a split second. After detecting the shrimp’s burrow, the eel plunged headfirst into it. Moments later, it emerged already crunching its prey — a formidable predator in its own right.

Dauin is home to some fantastic muck diving, and I thoroughly enjoyed leading aThe Underwater Club workshop here at the photo-friendly Silver Reef Dive Resort.

Over the next three days, dozens of passionate underwater photographers will be exploring these waters and creating images for the Dive Dauin 2026 photo competition, across five categories: Macro, Fish Portraits, Nudibranchs, Wide Seascapes and Behaviour.

I’m honoured to be part of the judging panel this year, and I can’t wait to see what participants bring back from their dives in these critter-rich waters.

Can you spot the giant frogfish?
We’ve been enjoying some fantastic diving in Dauin, Philippines, while staying at the photo-friendly Silver Reef Dive Resorts.

I’m looking forward to seeing what other underwater photographers will capture over the coming days, when I and 4 other judges will select the winners of the Dive Dauin 2026 Photo Competition.

Some of the most meaningful underwater photographs aren't just about marine life — they're about the experiences we share beneath the surface. 🌊

For our upcoming June session inside The Underwater Club, we'll be joined by featured photographer Nathaniel Schmidt 🇲🇽

Nathaniel is one of 6 TUC members whose images will be featured and discussed live during the event — with more featured photographers to be announced soon.

About Nathaniel 📷

🌿 Based in Northern Baja California, Mexico
🌊 Lifelong diver inspired by the Pacific kelp forests
👨‍👧‍👧 Recently rediscovered the underwater world through his two daughters, who now dive as well
📸 Enjoys both macro and wide-angle photography

Shooting With 📷

📷 Sony A7R V
🔁 Previously shot with an Olympus TG-7
🐠 Photographs whatever the dive presents — from tiny subjects to expansive underwater scenes

During the live session, we'll review a selection of Nathaniel's images together — discussing composition, lighting, storytelling, editing choices, and ways to strengthen already strong photographs. 🗨

These sessions aren't just valuable for the featured photographers... they're equally valuable for everyone watching and learning alongside them.

I’m pleased to share that one of my images received an Honourable Mention in the Colour Print category of the 2026 Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year photo competition.

But what makes me even happier is seeing so many members of The Underwater Club recognised this year. In total, 11 members of The Underwater Club received awards, category wins, honourable mentions, or special mentions across the competition.

A special congratulations to Maryline Renault, who earned four awards including a category win, and to my friends Capozzola, Vanessa Mignon and Luc Rooman, who were also recognised in the “Colour Prints” category. Renée and Vanessa took 1st and 2nd place, while Luc and I received Honourable Mentions—the four of us “hanging out” together in Colour Prints 😊

My photo was taken in Montague Island (NSW, Australia), diving with Underwater Safaris Narooma 🦭

Congratulations to all the winners and finalists 👏
