Can we just take a moment to acknowledge how freaking awesome the weather has been so far this winter? Like I was wearing a tee shirt on the weekend? Bit colder today, but the sunshine has been sooooooo good! Anyone else in Sydney feeling pretty delighted by this winter weather?

That gap-toothed grin? You’ve got about five minutes with it.

Then the big tooth pushes through and it’s gone, and you’ll barely remember the wonky little smile that’s beaming at you right now.

It’s the same with all of it. The chubby hand that still reaches for yours in the carpark, the way they pronounce “lellow”, the way they ask you why for EVERYTHING, and the current obsession you’re sick to death of hearing about.

You think you’ll remember it, you won’t. Not the exact sound of it, not the way it made you laugh on a Thursday. It slips away so gradually you don’t even notice it’s gone.

That’s the whole reason I do this. To catch the version of them you’ve got right now, gap tooth and all, before they swap it for the next one.

These little details are the ones you’ll give anything to see again.

Comment or DM me “Joy” and let’s catch them while they’re here. 🧡

“But what if my baby cries the whole time?”
It’s one of the most common worries I hear before a newborn session. That the baby won’t sleep, won’t settle, will scream the place down and ruin the photos.
14 years of capturing newborns has taught me that the crying is all part of it.
A photo of a baby crying, little face scrunched up, completely over it… they’re always my favourites, and yours too. Because this chapter you’re in right now, the feeds, the endless poo explosions, the tiny furious cries that somehow already feel like the most important sound in the world.
A newborn session at home is never about forcing a sleeping, posed baby naked on a bean bag. It’s slow and led entirely by them. We stop for feeds and cuddles. If they cry, we wait, or capture it, because that’s real too. There is no schedule a newborn has to keep up with. I work around them, always.
So if you’re worried your baby won’t be perfect on the day, please don’t be. Perfect isn’t what we’re after.
We’re after true, and true is whatever your baby does. 🧡

“My kids are too wild for photos.”

I hear this one all the time. Usually from a mum who’s picturing a session where everyone sits still, looks at the camera, and smiles on command. And she already knows her kids will never do that.

Good!! Because I don’t want that either.

The wildness is the whole point, the kid hanging upside down, shrieks of laughter when dad swings them. The chaos of a family that can’t keep still because they’re too busy having fun. That’s not the thing getting in the way of the photo, thats what makes the photo.

I’m not here to wrangle your kids into a tidy little row, I’m here to catch them exactly as they are. Loud, fast, giggling, upside down… the version of them you’ll ache for in ten years.

So if your kids are “too wild,” you’re exactly who I want in front of my camera.

Bring on the chaos

Golden hour in these cooler months, seriously they are off the charts!!

This is the time of day I’ll chase across any coastline. When the light goes low and honey-soft, the kids stop performing for the camera and start just being themselves, and the whole family forgets I’m even there.

Winter light is a secret weapon. The sun sits lower, the golden hour stretches longer, and you don’t have to keep the kids up past bedtime to catch it. Rug up, chase the last of the light, then home for a warm bath. Some of the loveliest sessions of the whole year happen right now.

If you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time. I’ve got a few spots left for winter sunset bookings, when the days are short and the light is at its best.

Comment or DM me “Joy” and let’s capture your magic. 🧡

Our first family home had stained carpet and a bright blue couch I used to apologise for.

You know the one. The hand-me-down furniture that didn’t match. The lounge room was so small you could touch both walls if you really tried. I’d do that nervous little laugh when people came over. “Sorry about the mess, sorry about the couch, sorry there isn’t much room.”

I look back now and I want to shake myself.

Because that tiny, daggy, blue-couch home is where we brought our first baby through the front door, terrified and besotted. It’s where the 3am feeds happened. Where he took his first wobbly steps across that awful carpet. It was never going to be our forever home. But it was our first one. The first walls that held our little family.

Your kids won’t remember that home the way you do, they might not remember it at all. The photos you take inside it become the only version they’ll ever know of where they began. Or they’ll be the keepers of their very first memories. Either way, one day you’ll be sitting beside your grown-up kid, pointing at a photo, saying “this was our first home, this is where we brought you home to”

That story becomes a memory you get to hand them.

So please don’t wait for the perfect house, don’t book a studio that looks like everyone else’s photos. Your home, bright blue couch and all, is the most precious backdrop you’ll ever have. It’s the one that tells your story.
