Golden hour in these cooler months, seriously they are off the charts!!

This is the time of day I’ll chase across any coastline. When the light goes low and honey-soft, the kids stop performing for the camera and start just being themselves, and the whole family forgets I’m even there.

Winter light is a secret weapon. The sun sits lower, the golden hour stretches longer, and you don’t have to keep the kids up past bedtime to catch it. Rug up, chase the last of the light, then home for a warm bath. Some of the loveliest sessions of the whole year happen right now.

If you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time. I’ve got a few spots left for winter sunset bookings, when the days are short and the light is at its best.

Comment or DM me “Joy” and let’s capture your magic. 🧡

Our first family home had stained carpet and a bright blue couch I used to apologise for.

You know the one. The hand-me-down furniture that didn’t match. The lounge room was so small you could touch both walls if you really tried. I’d do that nervous little laugh when people came over. “Sorry about the mess, sorry about the couch, sorry there isn’t much room.”

I look back now and I want to shake myself.

Because that tiny, daggy, blue-couch home is where we brought our first baby through the front door, terrified and besotted. It’s where the 3am feeds happened. Where he took his first wobbly steps across that awful carpet. It was never going to be our forever home. But it was our first one. The first walls that held our little family.

Your kids won’t remember that home the way you do, they might not remember it at all. The photos you take inside it become the only version they’ll ever know of where they began. Or they’ll be the keepers of their very first memories. Either way, one day you’ll be sitting beside your grown-up kid, pointing at a photo, saying “this was our first home, this is where we brought you home to”

That story becomes a memory you get to hand them.

So please don’t wait for the perfect house, don’t book a studio that looks like everyone else’s photos. Your home, bright blue couch and all, is the most precious backdrop you’ll ever have. It’s the one that tells your story.

One day this yawn will be a teenager who sleeps till noon and grunts at you from under a doona.

But right now it’s the whole world cracking open in a tiny face. The scrunched nose, the fists that haven’t learned to unclench. That impossibly small sound that somehow fills the entire room.

Everything in you is pulled toward this brand new person who has flipped your whole life sideways and you’d do it again in a heartbeat.

You’re exhausted, you’re running on toast crusts and cold tea. The days feel long and you’re not sure what day it even is.

I know right now the days feel endless, but I promise you that one day soon, you will blink and those days that felt long will suddenly just disappear and you’ll go looking for it, desperate to do it all over again.

These are the photos you’ll be so glad you have. Because they’re proof of how new they were, how much you already loved someone you’d only just met. 🧡

This is the magic of childhood.

Running wild through the bush, dirt paths, no destination, not a worry in the world.

Kids don’t need perfectly planned adventures, they need this. Space to explore, freedom to run, and be wild.

The thing about childhood is it feels endless when you’re living it, but from where I stand now, I know how quickly it changes.

One day they’re running through the bush like this, the next, they’re teenagers who are spending less and less time with you.

So let them run, let them get muddy, let them lead the way and discover things on their own terms.

And please please please… document it. Because you’ll want to remember this, their wild, free, adventurous little souls that exist’s right now, in this moment.

This is what childhood looks like, isn’t it beautiful x

I do tend to break out into dance when I’m stoked about a shot during a shoot. This shoot had me happy dancing like nobody was watching! Wanna guess which shot made me break out in dance the hardest?

Your house, your front steps, your you.

This is where your kids have grown up. Where they’ve learned to walk, to climb, to jump off things they probably shouldn’t. Where the everyday chaos and joy and mess of your family actually lives.

That’s what makes photos like this so personal.

They’re not just beautiful, they’re yours.

Years from now, your kids will look at these and remember this house. This exact spot. The sound of their laughter echoing off the steps.

That’s home.

If you’ve been wondering where to have your family photos, don’t overlook your own backyard. Sometimes the most meaningful sessions happen right where you already are.

This little starfish onesie had a special meaning for these new parents, and that’s what I love about lifestyle newborn photography.
No generic props or matching sets that don’t feel like you. Just the things that actually matter, the onesie Grandma bought, the blanket from your baby shower, the little details that tell your story.
That’s what makes these photos yours xx

I never got proper maternity photos.

We took a few iPhone shots. Casual mirror selfies, and that’s it.

At the time, that felt like enough.

But looking back now? I wish I’d done it properly. I wish I had images that captured how I felt, not just how I looked, because I absolutely loved being pregnant.

I wish I’d documented my body doing something extraordinary, instead of brushing it off as “just pregnancy.

Because you don’t realise how special it is until it’s gone.

i can’t go back and capture mine. But I can make sure you don’t have the same regret.

If you’re pregnant right now and you’ve been thinking “maybe I don’t need photos” or “I’ll just take some on my phone”… please don’t.

This chapter deserves to be documented, properly and beautifully, in a way that honors what your body is doing right now.

Trust me on this one.

This was the second shoot at RISE Blue Mountains, and their little guy was a little shy when they arrived. Shy, clinging to mum, a little scared of the camera.

So I showed the girls what I always do first. Forget the photos. Win over the kid.

Those first few minutes aren’t about getting the shot. They’re about being silly and building trust through play. Because the second that little one decides you’re fun and safe, everything changes.

By the end of the session he was our best little buddy. Running around, adventuring, keeping mum and dad on their toes with his fearless energy. And then the photos came easy, they always do when the energy is right.

This is the stuff we work through at RISE.

Not just how to shoot, but how to lead a session so it flows for everyone in it.

Melbourne is next.
