Fringed Tree Frogs (Spicicalyx eucnemis)
An iconic, endemic species found around the rainforest streams in Iron Range National Park. I wasn’t sure how good our chances were in the dry season but after finding a couple of nice streams, they were both common and calling! Always love seeing a bit of variation in the colour and pattern too 🐸

Blue-tailed Monitors are one of the most elusive reptiles we search for when exploring Cape York’s rainforest. Just catching a flash of blue as it disappears into the forest is a thrill and often one of my personal highlights of a tour. The species no doubt took a tragic plunge when Cane Toads invaded their isolated habitat, but it is great to see them persisting.

Within the Sydney area, there’s some pretty special and iconic species I always love targeting while Herping. It’s just coming into the time of year that things are starting to move and I’m so eager to start looking for some of my favourite locals again.

Pretty lucky to encounter this gorgeous Diamond Python (Morelia spilota spilota) enjoying the warm weather last week! These snakes are one of my all time favourite species to encounter around Sydney and this large, clean adult was stunning! It was over 6 foot long, in perfect condition and didn’t have a mark on it. What a great snake

After a heavy downpour in the Top End, large puddles formed across the landscape. We heard these Northern Spadefoots (Notaden melanoscaphus) calling from almost a kilometre away and didn’t realise how far in they were until we finally found them. There were several calling around this one small pool and they weren’t even slightly bothered by our presence. They’ve gotta be of the goofiest looking frogs in the country but I absolutely love em!

Finding a wild Inland Taipan in outback Australia!
Throw back to this encounter with this beautiful adult Inland last year. A very intelligent species that has a pretty fearsome reputation. Living in such a remote part of the country means encounters with this species are very few and far between. As a result, bites are incredibly rare and the species has not contributed to a single human death! A pretty crazy stat for the world's most toxic snake. Taipans as a whole are very feared across Australia. I reckon these Inland Taipans have it good out here - they're safe from all the bogans with shovels!

Continuing the Demansia theme with this adult Greater Black Whip Snake (Demansia papuensis) found under a small sheet of tin in Cape York. These snakes are the largest in their genus, capable of reaching around 6 feet in length! They’re quite commonly encountered in the drier parts of the region and are certainly my favourite of the Whippys up there. We also spotted a slightly larger one zip off the road nearby but came back shortly after to see it killed by a car in the same spot…
