Fred 🖤
Learning how to “dog”.
Easing into basic obedience and social manners. Fred craves human contact and affection, though he often doesn't know how to handle himself, navigating shelter life on leash. He quickly becomes over-excited at the sight of the leash, excessively jumping, biting it and anything closet to him.
He struggles with separation anxiety and being alone once the interaction is over, making it difficult to leave his presence.
However, once out of the shelter premises, he starts to show a calmer demeanour.
💬 Communicate:
With clear communication, Fred is beginning to desensitise to the leash with numerous repetitions of the “on and off” exercise. When he jumps up, I immediately put the leash back down and move forward into him, creating spatial pressure until he offers the desired behaviour (in this case, sitting or calmly with all four paws on the ground).
From there, we work on the duration (how long he stays sitting/ standing) until he has settled enough to move on to the following step.
Next, we take the leash off and then back on him while he continues offering calm behaviour, resulting in leaving and returning to each location.
Ideally, the best outcome is to undo Fred's inappropriate association (breaking the chain) with the leash and begin associating it with a calm, neutral approach.
In this video, we worked on:
▫️Leash desensitisation
▫️ Engagement
▫️Social manners
▫️Sit-stays
▫️Crate training (which didn't involve any training on my part. Freddy took to the crate like a fish to water. From him coming out in an anxious state into the busy car park and up to my car, lying down straight away, relaxing in the crate was a huge moment. A lasting moment that will stay with me, on so many levels, for many reasons. But, at that exact point in time, nothing else mattered. Fred was finally, peacefully content.
▫️Recalls
▫️ Confidence building
▫️Manual handling
Working with Fred in this exact approach is why I love training. He is a beautiful, handsome boy with such a genuine, loving nature. He only wants to cuddle up and be right next to his person’s side- a true love bug with plenty of kisses to go around.
Good dog, Freddy bum. 🖤
