when looking for things to do in tirana, albania this place kept popping up as a must visit food spot.

popular with locals and tourists, ‘buk e gjath’ from Mrizi i Zanave Agroturizem serves ‘hot dogs’ with oozing cheese and crusty bread.

there is a veggie option too (which i had). it’s a cheap and delicious option for lunch in the city.

the country continues to surprise me…

beautiful prizren is a historic old town where it’s possible to get a photograph with a mosque, a church and an ancient fortress all in the same frame.

the centre piece of the town is the beautiful classic stone bridge and the 17th century sinan pasha Mosque, close by is the main square with its famous fountain that has been the social heart of the old town for centuries. it is said that if you drink from it you will return to prizren one day, or even that you will fall in love and marry someone from prizren.

surrounded by mountains and nature, prizren is one of the most photographed skylines in all of kosovo and a less visited stop on the balkans route. kosovo still carries the stigma of the war in the 90s but the reality is a far cry from this. visiting prizren you will enjoy the bustling local life and historic landmarks.

the most recent capital city in all of europe 🇽🇰

holding that title since kosovo declared independence in 2008, pristina or, more accurately, prishtina is the vibrant yet chill capital with a rich, but painful history.

growing up in the 90s we heard of war torn kosovo and so i had little clue what to expect. little often visited on the traveller trail, but since the tourism boom in albania wanderers are discovering this magical place more and more.

from the dua lipa mural, the bustling mother theresa boulevard, and even a bill clinton statue - this is a city to keep your eye on.

beautiful berat in albania has captivated people for thousands of years, with the most iconic period being the ottoman era, when the distinctive house design became popular and earned the location the nickname “city of a thousand windows”.

the unesco world heritage city has two neighbourhoods split by the osum river, mangalem and gorica face each other like a twin soul.

visiting here you will wonder at the unique-looking buildings, wander the old town streets, and climb to the castle for sweeping views over the city and surrounding mountains.

i stayed at a lovely guesthouse called b&b sheshalliu, where the local family looked after me wonderfully. it is right by the main tourist area of mangalem but down a side street, so it is incredibly peaceful with views over the famed houses.

a trip to albania is not complete without a stay in berat.

after seeing an intriguing video online for albanian night in tirana, albania i knew it was something i had to go to.

immerse yourself in a traditional albanian wedding with costumes, dancing, singing and a comical performance.
you’ll get taught some dance moves and you might get selected to join the show...

there is so much to offer in the country’s captial but this is unlike anything you’ll get anywhere else.

not what you expect.

tirana in albania is a thriving, burgeoning city that blends cool cafes, history and unique skyscrapers.

the city hums with possibilities and is a far cry from any preconceived ideas of what a balkan capital is like.

with albania featuring heavily in the news right now and soaring up many people’s bucket lists, now is a great time the captivating capital.

my visit to the blue eye did not go as planned 🔵 👁️

most people will travel from sarandë or ksamil, but i had originally planned on getting a private transfer from kamil to gjirokaster with a stop at the blue eye but that didn’t end up working out and so i had to visit from gjirokaster which is a bit trickier.

the issue was that the bus timetable from sarande to gjirokaster had massively reduced leaving the only option of leaving on the minibus at 8am from gjirokaster with one company and returning back there with a 10.30am pick through another company.

it all worked out in the end but i should have just visited from sarandë in a day trip. but even that you only get about two hours there, which may not be enough depending on what you want to do there.

overall it is a very beautiful place and had the weather been better and i had more time i think it would have been wonderful. it is one of the most famous spots in albania.

this is how to get from ksamil to gjirokaster in albania.

currently there is no direct bus so you have to go via sarandë. this can involve the fairly regular public bus or you might stumble across a furgon which is like a mini bus you flag down and then pay when you get off. it is what the locals use. best to check price as you get on. this is what i ended up using.

from sarandë you can pick up a mini bus to gjirokaster. it will often be the same one going to the famous blue eye as it is on the way. you can actually do gjirokaster in a day trip if you are short on time.

btw this was when i was still getting to grips with how to pr ounce certain place names…
