Walking into Stuรฐlagil was instantly rewarding. We parked on the east side and followed the path in the sunshine, stopping to take in the twisted basalt columns that line the canyon. This is one of the largest and most striking formations of its kind in Iceland. The water below is known for changing dramatically with weather and glacial runoff, shifting from calm turquoise to fast, opaque grey, but we were lucky enough to see it still and bright. We clambered over the rocks, climbed down closer to the river, and dipped our fingers into the cold water. With the canyon quiet and the conditions perfect, it felt like we were seeing Stuรฐlagil at its absolute best.
