Walking into Stuรฐlagil was instantly rewarding. We parked on the east side and followed the path in the sunshine, stopping to take in the twisted basalt columns that line the canyon. This is one of the largest and most striking formations of its kind in Iceland. The water below is known for changing dramatically with weather and glacial runoff, shifting from calm turquoise to fast, opaque grey, but we were lucky enough to see it still and bright. We clambered over the rocks, climbed down closer to the river, and dipped our fingers into the cold water. With the canyon quiet and the conditions perfect, it felt like we were seeing Stuรฐlagil at its absolute best.

We made a lastโ€‘minute, impulsive decision to take a 1.5โ€‘hour detour out to Borgarfjรถrรฐur Eystri for the chance to see puffins. By 8pm the light had turned pure gold. We walked out onto Hafnarhรณlmi and suddenly, we were standing in the middle of puffin heaven. Hundreds of them were perched outside their burrows, taking turns to dive into the water below in search of dinner for their chicks. Every time one returned with a beak full of sand eels, the kittiwakes would swoop in, trying to steal their catch midโ€‘air. We couldnโ€™t believe how close we were able to mingle with them, hanging out on the boardwalks perched above their homes. For a spontaneous detour, this turned into a major highlight.

Driving from the East Fjords toward Seyรฐisfjรถrรฐur felt like slipping into a quieter, more cinematic corner of Iceland. The road wound its way through deep valleys until the gorgeous little town appeared, tucked between the mountains. After wandering through the colourful streets, we carried on toward the waterfalls in the area, then climbed over the snowy mountain pass. Having the open road practically to ourselves was pure freedom. No crowds, no rush, just pulling over whenever we wanted to admire the giant lakes, steep fjord walls, and endless views.

Waking up to clear skies felt like Iceland had quietly changed mood overnight. We made a beeline for Stokksnes. The stillness gave us a perfect mirror effect of Vestrahorn reflected so cleanly across the blackโ€‘sand lagoon it almost didnโ€™t look real. With the windows down and the music turned up, we continued along Route 1, chasing the sunshine from glassy lakes to towering ocean cliffs. We even pulled over for the famous Red Chair, a quirky art piece bolted right onto a boulder along the East Fjords. Iceland felt completely different when the sun decided to show up.

The steep, leg-burning climb up Mรบlagljรบfur Canyon paid off the second we reached the top. Bathed in brilliant sunshine, the canyon opened up into a dramatic crack where two waterfalls plunged hundreds of meters down sheer, moss-draped cliffs. Watching Fulmars soar effortlessly between the towering rock walls was mesmerising. All along the trail, the surrounding peaks gave us sweeping views of distant glaciers. Despite being encircled by ice, we were certainly sweating in the sun on the way up and down.

Time stood still under the bridge at the Jรถkulsรกrlรณn glacier lagoon as we watched massive, electric-blue icebergs pulled toward the sea. Huge blocks of ice streaked with volcanic ash were washed out into the North Atlantic and then tossed back onto Diamond Beach as giant, glittering crystals. Walking along the shore felt like sifting through a giant treasure pile. Imagine what that beach would be worth if those sparkling gems were actual diamonds!

Catching a glimpse of Fjallsรกrlรณn from the ring road was enough to make us swerve straight into the nearest viewpoint. It was a scene we had to let our eyes adjust to. Icebergs drifted in the foreground, and the glacier stretched all the way up the mountain like a frozen staircase. We were lucky enough to watch one of the larger icebergs flip, a slow, powerful roll that sent ripples across the whole lagoon.

Svรญnafellsjรถkull had an unmistakably otherworldly feel. The crevasses were so sharp and defined that you could actually see how the glacier is constantly shifting and straining. It was our first glimpse of blue sky and actual sunlight all week, which made the dramatic mountain backdrop stand out in sharp detail. We were silly enough to edge our way up onto one of the glacierโ€™s sides, desperate to get a closer look. It was easy to see why this location was used as Dr Mannโ€™s ice planet in Interstellar.
