I was deeply honored to meet some extraordinary women today, all of whom have experienced family losses due to the current war in Myanmar. The long neck women belong to the Kayan Lawhi hill tribe, a subgroup of the Red Karen, and are also known as Padaung, although Kayan is their preferred designation. Hailing from Myanmar (Burma), these hill tribes fled to Thailand to escape conflict with the military regime in Myanmar. According to the women, the rings they wear represent a symbol of their cultural identity, where beauty is paramount. My photos seek to highlight the unusual and beautiful aspects of the long-necked women.
