Today I had a private student learning newborn photography with me.
He’s been a portrait photographer for many years, but newborn photography is a completely different world. Working with tiny little humans requires not only creativity, but patience, safety awareness, and responsibility.

What I really admired was his mindset.
He told me he didn’t want to simply “practice” on other people’s precious newborn babies without proper guidance first. Instead, he chose to invest in education and learn the right foundations before stepping into the industry seriously.

And honestly, I respect that so much.

Yes, practice makes perfect. But without professional guidance, practicing on real newborns can sometimes become irresponsible and even unethical. Safety should never be something photographers figure out through trial and error.

By giving him hands-on learning opportunities from day one, he was already able to understand posing safety, soothing techniques, workflow, and how to always keep the safety box checked throughout the session.

Investing in yourself is never a waste.
No matter what stage you’re at in your career, there is always room to level up, refine your skills, and become better at what you do.

So the real question is…
Would you invest in yourself to upgame your skills?

A lot of people think beautiful newborn photos come from presets or editing…

But honestly, lighting and camera settings make the biggest difference ✨

For this setup I used:
📸 50mm lens
📸 ISO 400
📸 f2

Shooting with a wide aperture helps create a softer background while keeping the baby beautifully separated from the scene.

Natural light gives newborn photos a calm, timeless, and authentic feeling that I really love 🤍

Understanding light matters more than owning expensive gear.

One thing parents often question during newborn sessions is:
“Why do photographers place babies on their tummies?”

But interestingly… this is actually the position many newborns feel safest in.

It reminds them of the womb — warm, curled up, secure. It also helps reduce those tiny startle reflex movements that can suddenly wake them up.

Newborn photography isn’t just about cute poses.
It’s about understanding baby behaviour, soothing techniques, and creating a calm, safe environment first.

I usually hum softly beside the baby until she settles into deep sleep, then gently create that soft V-curve pose everyone loves ✨

Hi everyone, this is Sissi 🤍

JustKidi Photography Studio will be hosting a 2-day one-on-one newborn photography training course this June, and we’re currently looking for 4 newborn baby models to participate.

If your baby is due around late May to early June, and will be under 14 days old during 6th–7th June 2026, you’re welcome to apply.

The session will be very calm, safe, and professional, with only myself and one student couple attending the shoot.

Each baby will be photographed for around 2 hours.

Selected families will receive:
✨ 6 professionally retouched high-resolution images
✨ A newborn photography experience valued at $620

Sydney Mammas, we are looking for 4 newborn babies to model for our upcoming one-on-one newborn photography training course at JustKidi Photography Studio.

JustKidi Photography Studio is an internationally renowned newborn photography studio based in Sydney. Our principal photographer, Sissi Wang, has taught newborn photography in over 30 countries and has extensive experience in newborn posing, safety, and education.

This model call is for a 2-day one-on-one newborn photography training course. Only one student couple and myself will be present during the session, so the environment will be calm, safe, and professional.

【Session Dates】
6–7 June 2026
Each baby will be needed for approximately 2 hours.
Babies must be available to attend our studio during one of these two days.

【Baby Requirements】
Babies must be under 14 days old on 6–7 June 2026.
This is most suitable for babies due in late May or early June.

Bucket Pose Safety
Bucket pose may look simple, but safety comes first.
A newborn should never be sitting unsupported inside a bucket.
I always build firm padding underneath, keep the bucket stable, support the baby properly, and make sure the chin is not pressed into the chest.
A beautiful newborn photo always starts with safety.

Why N**e Newborn Photos Are Not As Simple As They Look
N**e newborn photos may look simple, clean and effortless — but behind every pose, there is a lot of planning.

For this session, the client wanted both angel-themed photos and n**e newborn portraits, so the workflow had to be carefully arranged.

We started with the angel setup first to avoid unnecessary movement and fiddling with the baby. Once the baby was settled on her tummy, I added handmade clouds and wings to create the angel look.

Then we moved into a chin-on-hands pose by gently adjusting the baby onto a diagonal line. Even a small movement can unsettle a newborn, so patience, gentle touch and precise posing are everything.

The eyes need to be fully closed. The fingers need to sit naturally. The angle needs to be flattering.

Newborn photography is never just about placing a baby on a blanket.

It’s about workflow, safety, patience and details.

How I Create Newborn Moon Pillow Photos At Home

A newborn moon pillow photo doesn’t always have to be created in a studio.

For this in-home newborn session, I chose the dining table next to the window because the natural light was soft and beautiful. It also allowed me to sit on a chair while working, which helps protect my back during the session.

After 10+ years of photographing newborns, I’ve learned that looking after my own body is part of running a sustainable photography business.

As photographers, we are the core of our business. If we don’t look after ourselves, we can’t keep creating beautiful work for our clients long-term.

Once the baby was placed safely onto the moon pillow, I started micro-adjusting the padding underneath to keep the pose precise, comfortable, and up to my standard.

After finishing the moon pillow shots, I replaced it with a small pillow and moved into a tummy pose to create more variety in the gallery.

Simple newborn photos are never as simple as they look.
