Sprinter is here! That transition period between Spring and Winter.

Hearing the first miagagratory voices reemerge from the soundscape after their Winter hiatus. It is the voice of the Yellow-faced Honeyeater that marks this season for me. I have heard a couple of the brave ones, in the last week, as they head back down here from further North. Lucky the mistletoe is still flowering.

The Superb Fairy-wrens have transitioned into their breeding plumage.

Wattle is flowering and nest building for the Maggies and Wrens is underway.

Mistletoe plays a very important part in our local ecosystem. It has just started flowing and will provide essential food for our nectar eating birds, like the Eastern Spinebill, over the Winter months.

The Mistletoe bird is almost exclusively responsible for seed dispersal. They swallow the sticky berries, and when the seed passes through their gut, they excrete it directly onto host branches where it germinates.

Flame Robin 🔥

This was a first for me and very special to see a few of these brightly coloured gems in a local place. I have been visiting this spot for quite a few years so it was very exciting to meet a new feathered friend.

I thought his posturing was quite interesting. It was like he was wearing tails and missing the top hat.

These sweet little birds were hanging out and feeding with the some Flame Robins on a recent overnight hike I did. They seemed to be favouring one spot on the fringe of some wooded and open country.
