A tear is NOT an episiotomy. 👑

If you’ve been following the Lindsay Clancy trial, you may have heard testimony describing a birth tear as “an episiotomy.”

They are not the same thing.

And it’s an important distinction when we’re talking about birth.

✨ A tear happens spontaneously.
The tissues of the va**na and/or perineum stretch as baby is born and sometimes tear naturally.

Tears can range from first degree, involving the skin, through to third and fourth degree tears involving the a**l sphincter.

✂️ An episiotomy is an intentional surgical incision.
A healthcare professional cuts the perineum and va**nal wall to create additional space for baby to be born.

An episiotomy can also extend further and become a deeper tear.

Routine episiotomy is not recommended by the World Health Organization.

There are circumstances where an episiotomy may be clinically recommended, including some assisted births or situations where baby needs to be born quickly.

But tear ≠ episiotomy.

One happens spontaneously.

The other is a medical intervention.

And when we’re discussing someone’s birth history, trauma or experience, using the correct language matters.

Birth education isn’t about making people afraid of intervention.

It’s about understanding what is happening to your body, why it’s being recommended, the alternatives available and giving informed consent. 👑

The best time to book your newborn photos is during pregnancy 🤍

Once you have your due date, you can reserve your newborn availability without needing to choose an exact session date.

For some families, booking early feels exciting. For others, especially after IVF, loss or a long journey to pregnancy, making plans can feel much bigger.

There is no right week to enquire. When you feel ready and know you have found the photographer you want, reach out.
I reserve limited newborn availability around each due date, then once your baby is earth side, we choose the perfect session date together.

These photos are about remembering how tiny they were, how they fit against you and what those first weeks felt like.

Turns out I’m not really a “stay home and relax” kind of person. 😂

Give me somewhere to go, something to see, a road I haven’t driven, a beach to find, a random little stop along the way… anything.

Because as much as I love home, if I stay there too long I genuinely start to lose it. 🫠

I need the adventures.
The spontaneous plans.
The “where does this road go?” moments.
The fresh air, new places and stories that come from actually living life.

Home is where I recharge…
but out there is where I feel alive. 🚙✨

✨ Birth Story ✨

Three days of prodromal labour. Endless waiting, surrender, rest, tears, encouragement and trust in the process.

Then, finally, the moment everything changed. 🤍

This beautiful physiological water birth was a reminder that birth doesn’t always unfold in a straight line. Sometimes the journey to meeting your baby requires patience, deep strength and unwavering support.

Thank you, Amanda and Nathan, for allowing me to witness and share such an incredibly intimate chapter of your story. It is always an honour to be invited into these sacred spaces.

Every birth is different, every journey is unique, and every story deserves to be remembered. ✨
