Saturday evening I headed out with my dear friend to attempt something tricky - ghost mushrooms with lightning! Yes, we are slightly crazy. We don't mind.

Alas we did not see any lightning but we did find no less than 15 sites with ghost mushrooms and a good handful of those were glowing beautifully.

After all this rain this weekend I expect we will see plenty more of these fungi starting to fruit. Hooray for more fungi hunting!

A very special location with a very dear friend and a beautiful view of the heavens above.

I spent a lovely Wednesday afternoon walking various trails of Yanchep National Park without much success. I have seen some fantastic images from this location in the past. This week however I only found one closer which was not overly impressive. The lower bunch I thought too old to glow brightly but the top bunch had potential. Worth a go at least...

Notice how the lower bunch there are golden-brown with rugged edges curled up generally looking a little worse for wear. Compare that to the top two which have soft round edges, nice structure and a lighter more consistent creamy colour. Usually that top bunch is what we are seeking to find that nice glow.

However, I was wrong about this bunch, just look at that glow!

This week we have a pretty bright moon which usually means trouble for low light photography. Two factors were in my favour this evening:

1) The overcast conditions reduced that moonlight

2) The fungi were nestled deep into this notch meaning that although the surrounding woodlands were bright, the mushrooms themselves were in a nice dark location. See this image for a nice wide angle shot at night though the sky looks like daytime! 30 seconds at ISO6400.

I hope some of these tips aid you in taking your own images of these pretty cool fungi. The rain this week will help too!

Finally I was able to photograph a great bloom of Ghost Mushrooms with special thanks to Karen for sharing the location with me - and then coming along to lay in the dirt and build an umbrella and black out curtain fort in which to photograph them together.

These ghost mushrooms formed in a huge cluster with several others growing nearby. Unfortunately right beside a large roundabout with plenty of street lights - such is life when it comes to these glowing fungi.

Location: Dalleyup, WA.

Tonight I venture NOR. Wish me luck

I was very excited this morning to wake up to two Highly Commended and one Commended Award in The Landscape Photographers Award 2026.

The Aurora Vortex was an experiment I was playing with to see what a star trail would look like if the Southern Lights were to appear. We didn't end up getting a magnificent show that evening which is just as well as that would have overpowered the stars. What I wasn't expecting was how difficult it was to merge images - usually I would be playing around with the lighten mode in photoshop layers but with the bright red sky this did not work. A challenge but a fun one - and always great stretching our skills and trying new things.

The Bowerbird Museum is one of my favourite places to shoot astrophotography up at Wooleen Station - currently shut to visitors but watching that space keenly to see what happens in the future.

And lastly the Jokers Tunnel just outside of Yalgoo. A fun place to explore and admire the beautiful rock formations at the centre of the tunnel. Not an official camp spot but a beautiful place to spend a night shooting the night sky.

Congratulations to all the other winners, runners up and commendations.
