Remembering Rarotonga!! 🏝️🐠🕊️🦋🌞🍸🥥🪸🌺🐋🪷 ..we have just spent an incredible week (11-18 August) with our friends at “Mountain View” - Matavera, in the South Pacific Capital of the Cook Islands.. as you view the album look for angel terns and fruit doves, coral roses and rainbows over the Rarotonga dive boat, tropical delicacies and cocktails, a rusty wrangler and whale song over a crown of thorns, butterflies and birds (Rarotongan Starling and Monarch), a tattler ,a turtle, a tropic bird, fancy fish, a frigate, lobster claw and long white sandy beaches..

..a snapshot of New Zealand just over a week ago!! Reconnecting with old friends and family was so special mixed with a bit of nostalgia and reminiscing.. I’ve not been back for 17 years. Thank you all for the wonderful memories.. till next time 🤠 The images range from snow and ice to old friends, farm animal friends and strange and unusual birds including kiwi, kea, wekka, bellbird, grey gerygone, chaffinch, yellowhammer, black fantail, shoveler, mallard and peacock!!

Post dawn preening session.. gold on gold!! Turn up the volume to appreciate the ambiance - little grass birds, ravens, swans, gulls, musk duck, oystercatcher etc and of course the stars of the show, the orange-bellied parrots themselves. One of the rarest birds in the world and cryptic, collective observation efforts have only reported about 11 individuals on the mainland so far this season. That is out of a wild population of about 86 individuals that migrated north to winter on the mainland from the South Western tip of Tasmania - their summer breeding ground. I sat with seven of these beauties for over an hour while the fog swirled around the salt marsh then lifted on this chilly last morning of July. (The other birds are black shouldered (Australian) kite and brolgas.

If all we are to remember are faded silhouettes, it may just be time to change our perceptions and attitudes about the wild places and creatures we are charged with protecting..
This is “Sisi” the White Rhinoceros - a symbol representing her wild counterparts - which face dire consequences and outcomes merely because of greed, a greed that would sell the horn (made of keratin) for $65k per kilogram! Utter selfishness and greed would barely begin to describe the twisted mentality driving the perpetrators and those who have created such a market but that is the challenge we face if we are to preserve these creatures for our future generations to appreciate.
