Hin Lim Photography is a Melbourne based photography practice offering Archival Heritage Recording, Architectural and Interior photography services.

Hin Lim Photography was established by Hin Lim in early 2008 with the goal of providing excellent value and quality photography for interior architects, designers, builders and developers. In addition to providing important photographic documentation of heritage places including buildings and structures, gardens and objects prior to alteration or demolition as required by law or permit conditions

in accordance with Heritage Victoria guidelines. Hin Lim Photography continues to maintain the highest standards that are demanded by best practice in the industry. In addition to being part of the professional photographic community that continually strives to improve the art of photography, I am an accredited member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP). Our aim is to establish long and mutually beneficial partnerships with our clients to assist them in achieve their goals. Before embarking on a career as architectural photographer, Hin Lim completed his Bachelor of Architecture with honours at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia in 1999 and worked at renowned architecture firm TR Hamzah & Yeang International in Kuala Lumpur. In 2003 Hin migrated to Australia and joined the well-respected firm of architects & heritage consultants, Lovell Chen in Melbourne. Hin accrued 10 years’ experience as an architect, including 7 years with conservation architects, Lovell Chen. His architectural background, together with many years as a passionate photographer, gives Hin an unparalleled understanding of the subject and a conscientious attention to detail, the qualities necessary to meet your architectural & heritage recording requirements. First Customs House

Built in 1838, Geelong's First Customs House is claimed to be the oldest authenticated building still standing in Victoria and holds strong historical and architectural significance.

Prefabricated in Sydney and transported to Geelong, it originally served as the town’s first Customs House, playing an important role in the early development of customs and trade in the Port Phillip colony. Later, it became Geelong’s first Telegraph Office, where the first message to Melbourne was sent in 1854 reporting the Ballarat goldfield riots.

Designed as a simple timber Gothic-style pavilion, the building reflects early nineteenth-century construction techniques. Relocated several times due to its portable design, it was eventually preserved in Eastern Park and restored in 1975 to protect this important piece of Victoria’s early colonial history.

Belcher Drinking Fountain

One of the oldest heritage objects in Geelong’s outdoor collection, the Belcher Drinking Fountain is architecturally, aesthetically and historically significant to Victoria. It was gifted to the Town of Geelong in 1874 by retiring Mayor Councillor G.F. Belcher.

Imported from England and crafted by renowned iron founders Andrew Handyside & Co., the fountain features Corinthian columns, a cylindrical structure, and a cupid figure above, inspired by the classical Monument of Lysicrates in Athens.

Architecturally, it is a rare and remarkably intact example of an early imported cast iron drinking fountain that still operates today. Historically, it reflects the values of the Temperance Movement, which promoted alternatives to alcohol consumption, and stands as a lasting tribute to George F. Belcher’s contribution to Geelong’s civic history.

Caulfield Racecourse

Established in 1876, significant for its associations with the Victoria Amateur Turf Club (VATC), now known as the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC); Caulfield Racecourse is historically, architecturally, aesthetically and socially significant to the State of Victoria.

It is historically significant as one of Australia’s premier metropolitan racecourses and one of only a few in Victoria continuously operating since the 19th century. It has been home to the internationally renowned Caulfield Cup since 1879, and part of the Melbourne Cup.

Architecturally, it is a notable and cohesive example of a racecourse complex, featuring a collection of well-preserved buildings and structures from the early to mid-twentieth century, including grandstands, betting facilities and race day infrastructure that reflect the evolution of racing operations.

Aesthetically, the expansive track, central flat, and mature tree-lined landscape, combined with its historic buildings, create a distinctive and recognisable racecourse setting that enhances the race day experience.

Socially, it has played a vital role in shaping Melbourne’s racing culture, attracting generations of racegoers, industry participants and the wider community, and remains a highly valued and iconic gathering place.

Eastern Park & Geelong Botanic Gardens

Eastern Park at Limeburners Point in Geelong is a 90-hectare public reserve used for recreation, horticulture, and botanical pursuits, home to the Geelong Botanic Gardens, sporting clubs and open grasslands.

Established as a Botanical Reserve in 1851, Geelong’s Eastern Park was shaped by curators Daniel Bunce and John Raddenberry, who introduced intricate paths, conifers and a core nursery that formed the foundation of the Geelong Botanic Gardens. Reflecting 19th-century scientific planting principles, the Gardens preserve Bunce’s original layout of parallel beds and paths, while incorporating later additions such as glasshouses, conservatories, the 21st Century Garden, rose garden, and decorative gates. The relocation of historic buildings and monuments from across Geelong has further enhanced the park’s cultural and visual significance.

Both Eastern Park and the Botanic Gardens are of significant historical, scientific and aesthetic value to Victoria. The site preserves 19th-century design elements, rare tree specimens, and commemorative plantings such as the Queen Victoria Avenue. Scientifically, it hosts diverse and rare species across both formal and picturesque landscapes. Aesthetically, the mature plantings, historic features, and scenic views over Corio Bay contribute to their enduring visual and cultural appeal.

Bridge Inn Mernda

The Bridge Inn Hotel in Mernda is one of the earliest commercial establishments outside Melbourne, first established in the 1840s near the Plenty River.

It was relocated to the corner of Bridge Inn Road and Plenty Road in the 1870s, with a major upgrade in 1891 that included brick cladding and the addition of a second storey. Serving as a longstanding community hub, the hotel has welcomed both locals and visitors for generations, reflecting Mernda’s early development and social life.

Cororooke Dairy Factory

The Cororooke Dairy Factory, established in 1901 in Cororooke, Victoria, operated for over a century before its closure in 2013.

The former Cororooke Dairy Factory holds significant historical value as a major site for dairy processing in the region for over 110 years. It is closely tied to the Colac Dairying Company, which played a dominant role in the local industry from the late nineteenth century, and contributed to the development of innovative technologies such as lactose production.

However, the factory holds low to medium architectural and technological significance, with its buildings being largely modern, utilitarian, and not reflective of significant advancements or unique construction methods.

This photographic archival recording was conducted by Hin Lim Photography in August 2015.

Korumburra Railway Station

Constructed in 1907 on the Melbourne - Port Albert Line, the Korumburra railway station complex is historically and aesthetically significant to the State of Victoria, and is of local social significance to the South Gippsland Shire.

It is historically significant as a key part of the Great Southern Railway, serving as a marshalling point for goods trains navigating steep descents, a junction for local coal mine lines, and the starting point for other branch services.

Aesthetically, it is a significant and a rare example of a station building built in the Queen Anne style.

As the largest town in the Shire, it also played a crucial role in shaping the Korumburra community and defining the town's identity.

Former Hoffman Brickworks

Established in the 1870s, the Former Hoffman Brickworks holds archaeological, architectural, historical, and scientific importance to the State of Victoria.

The site featured key architectural elements, including a brick press building, engine house, two Hoffman kilns and chimneys, which stood as a rare surviving examples of Melbourne's 19th-century brickmaking industry.

The Former Hoffman Brickworks was also significant to Brunswick's local history as a remaining example of the once-thriving clay manufacturing industry and played a crucial role in Melbourne's development by producing high-quality bricks for many buildings across the city.

Currently, the site has been partially redeveloped into residential apartments, retail spaces and community facilities. However, parts of the historic structures, like the kilns and chimneys, have been adapted to maintain its heritage value.

Burnham Beeches House & Garden

Historically, architecturally, and aesthetically significant to the State of Victoria, Burnham Beeches is an important example of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles in the Victorian context.

Designed by Harry Norris and built in the 1930s, the three-storey mansion was constructed for the wealthy business man Alfred Nicholas as a rural retreat.
