This Wednesday LIGHT PAINTING.

Just a reminder to bring your camera, tripod and rug up with some warm clothing for our light painting workshop on wednesday night. The venue will be outdoors at the usual location, University Shoalhaven, and the aim will be to capture some beautiful and dramatic light patterns. A small torch might also be useful.

JULY 2026 PHOTO OF THE MONTH WAS AWARDED TO JOSEPH HORVAT👏👏👏 SUN ORCHID. This image was taken on an overcast day, which helped bringing out the tonal nuances of the flowers and avoiding any distracting shadows. To isolate the sun orchid from the background, handheld focus stacking technique was used, with long lens, 420 mm. It was a bit windy, so a fast shutter speed was needed, 1/1000 s, at f/8 and 20 frames per second frame rate. This was necessary to avoid any movement of the sun orchid in the wind when taking a sequence of 14 images while moving camera forward by ~ 5cm. These images were later merged using Helicon Focus software, to obtain all of the sun orchid in sharp focus, while leaving the background blurred by the lens.

JULY 2026 PEOPLES CHOICE. drumroll please, the winner is DENIS CALE. 👏👏👏
Attached photo of the Beatle on a Flannel . It was taken on the coastal walk a few years ago when there was an abundance of flannel flowers. It was taken with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. settings were f/4.8 1/1500 sec (hand held and windy) ISO 100, Nikon D750 about a 50 % crop. The focus point was the beetle and the large aperture has resulted in the foreground petals being out of focus. If I remember it was a slightly overcast day which explains the soft shadows. I was positioned above the plant looking down at about a 45 degree angle to achieve a good perspective.

The SPC Digital assessment for May was “Animals”. There was a very loose interpretation which included animals that flew, swam and roamed. Our photographer Lloyd Anderson, the master in photography served this stunning image of a black swan, which deservedly won the photo of the Month. Congratulations Lloyd, those feathers are poetry in motion. 👏👏👏
