Hill Inlet š
This inlet Spans approximately 4.6 kilometres into Whitsunday Island⦠attached to the famous Whitehaven Beach, filled with magical shades of blue and green waters, enticing white swirling patterns in the silica when the tide falls, and not so known or talked about⦠an extraordinary mangrove system. While I have your attentionā¦
Letās talk a bit about mangroves..
Mangroves play an extremely important role in our ecosystem, heavily supporting all life.š±
Mangroves provide a natural infrastructure, which helps to protect areas close to the shoreline from erosion, as well as storm surge impacts, by absorbing copious amount of water, reducing the chances of coastal flooding. š
They also act as a nursery for over 75% of marine life! Hill Inlet in particular acts as an important nursery habitat for our Whitehaven localās in particular such as the cow tail sting ray & lemon shark. š¦
Mangroves also act as nursing areas for wildlife above water.
Some species of coastal birds rely on mangroves for part of their seasonal migration, while other wildlife use mangroves as a constant protective shelter. š
Thatās not allā¦
Mangroves protect water quality. They are able to remove nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff, before reaching important systems, such as seagrass habitats and coral reefs. šŖø
Theyāre massive CO2 absorbers!
Studies have found that Mangroves can sequester four times more carbon dioxide than rainforests can! This means they are crucial in decreasing impacts of global warming. š
While I could go on forever about mangroves, Iāll leave it here! š
I believe this kind of information is important for us to understand, as it heavily impacts our day to day lives in many more ways than most of us know.
Hopefully insight like this can give us a deeper appreciation for nature⦠how much good she does for us, and why we have to protect her! š
