🔥 Wings Over Shellharbour Day 1 Delivered ✈️👀

Today, on the 16th of May, TheGroundCrew spent the first public day of Wings Over Shellharbour 2026 at Shellharbour Airport — and it delivered a huge mix of warbirds, jets, helicopters, aerobatics, heritage aircraft and crowd-favourite stunt displays.

This wasn’t just a busy flying program either. Day 1 brought some genuinely significant moments, including the return of 4-ship SkyAces formation aerobatics, the first public airshow appearance for Pay’s two-seat Spitfire, the Shellharbour debut of the Corsair, and the de Havilland Vampire taking to the air for its Shellharbour debut.

Across the day, the flying program brought together everything from the RAAF Roulettes, Wolf Pitts Pro, Zivko Edge 540, L-39 Albatros, Hawker Sea Fury, T-28 Trojan, P-51 Mustangs, Spitfires, Corsair and Kittyhawk, through to the Neptune, Orion, Huey, Seahawk, Grumman Avenger and plenty more.

The stunts brought another level of energy too, with the Wall of Fire, Wheels vs Wings drag race, Rolling Runway Ute Landing and Knife-Edge FMX Jump giving the crowd plenty to react to between the flying displays.

On the ground, the atmosphere was just as strong — a great crowd, plenty of energy, and the chance to catch up with pilots, airshow crew, fellow photographers and attendees throughout the day.

All up, Day 1 was a massive start to the public airshow weekend, with Shellharbour putting on one of those aviation days that had something for everyone.

🔥 Wings Over Shellharbour Careers Day Sets The Tone ✈️👀

Today, on the 15th of May, TheGroundCrew spent the day at Wings Over Shellharbour for Careers Day, with Shellharbour Airport already coming alive ahead of a massive weekend of aviation action.

Across the day, we caught practice displays, arrivals and airfield activity from across the lineup, including Paul Bennet in the Wolf Pitts Pro, Riley McDonald in the Zivko Edge 540, SkyAces practice ahead of the 4-ship return, the Paul Bennet Airshows CAC Wirraway, HARS Orion, 100SQN Lockheed Hudson, Jet Flight L-39 Albatros, a FlyPelican Jetstream 32 making an appearance, and more.

The Paul Bennet Airshows de Havilland Vampire also touched down, adding to the excitement ahead of its Shellharbour debut in the air.

There are some huge moments building across the weekend too — the return of 4-ship SkyAces action, the first airshow appearance for Pay’s two-seat Spitfire, the Corsair’s Shellharbour debut, plus expected airborne appearances from classics like the Neptune, Orion, DC-3 and Caribou.

Even with the Connie not flying, its presence at Shellharbour still adds something special to the weekend — one of those aircraft that turns heads even when parked.

On the ground, Careers Day brought together food vendors, static displays, marquees and plenty of aviation atmosphere around the airfield, giving visitors a strong taste of what is still to come.

All up, a great start to the weekend — and if today was anything to go by, Wings Over Shellharbour 2026 is shaping up to deliver a big few days.

Callsign RUTHLESS departing Williamtown in the rain ⚡✈️

This afternoon at RAAF Base Williamtown, an RAAF EA-18G Growler launched from Runway 12 into gloomy, wet conditions as part of Exercise Diamond Spear activity around the base.

Not every aviation catch needs golden light — sometimes the low cloud, rain and grey backdrop make the moment feel even more powerful.

A pretty serious fast-jet departure for the local Williamtown skies.

Captured departing Sydney Airport, Thai Airways TG476 lifted off bound for Bangkok, operated by an Airbus A350-941.

The flight departed Sydney at 10:06 and later arrived in Bangkok at 16:08, ahead of its scheduled 16:20 arrival after a 9 hour 02 minute sector.

🔥 Growlers Into The Gloom — Diamond Spear Activity At RAAF Williamtown ✈️👀

This afternoon, on the 14th of May, TheGroundCrew captured an unusual sight in the Williamtown skies, with two RAAF Boeing EA-18G Growlers, A46-301 and A46-309, departing RAAF Base Williamtown from Runway 12 into rainy, gloomy conditions.

The Growlers have been operating in and around Williamtown as part of Exercise Diamond Spear 2026, bringing a different kind of fast jet activity to the local scene.

With the low cloud, wet air and grey backdrop, the departures had a completely different atmosphere — not the clean blue-sky look, but the sort of raw military aviation conditions that make these movements stand out.

The EA-18G Growler is one of the RAAF’s specialist electronic attack aircraft, and seeing two of them launch out of Williamtown together made for a pretty serious afternoon catch.

Orange tails everywhere at Sydney this morning 🧡✈️

With plenty of Jetstar aircraft around the airport, JQ762 was next to go — an Airbus A320-232 lifting out of Sydney on its run to Adelaide.

Scheduled out at 09:30, away around 10:03, and touching down in ADL at 11:31.

Always something good about watching a busy Sydney departure, especially when there’s a lineup of Jetstar aircraft in the background.

The flight gets the attention… but this is the team that gets it moving. ✈️

Captured at Newcastle Airport on 12 May 2026, this turnaround shows Virgin Australia flight VA1594 / Velocity 1594 preparing to depart Newcastle for Melbourne.

While passengers were boarding and families were waving goodbye from the gate, the team from Oceania Ground Force were already hard at work outside — unloading and loading baggage, moving conveyors, closing baggage doors, connecting the tug, coordinating the turnaround and getting the aircraft ready for pushback.

It’s one of those parts of aviation most people don’t stop to watch, but without this team, the flight doesn’t go anywhere.

Every job matters.
Every minute counts.
And when pushback finally begins, it’s the result of a whole team working together behind the scenes.

👀 The Work Behind The Turnaround — Oceania Ground Force At Newcastle ✈️

This afternoon, on the 12th of May, TheGroundCrew captured the Oceania Ground Force team working airside at Newcastle Airport, handling “Velocity 1594” before its flight down to Melbourne Tullamarine.

Operated by a Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800, the Newcastle–Melbourne service is one of those regular airline movements most people see only from the passenger side — but behind every departure is a team keeping the operation moving on the ground.

From baggage handling and ramp work to aircraft positioning, communication and turnaround flow, these are the moments that show just how much happens before the aircraft ever leaves the gate.

It’s not always the loudest or most obvious part of aviation, but it’s one of the most important.

Captured arriving into Sydney Airport, Thai Airways TG471 touched down after the overnight service from Bangkok, operated by Airbus A350-900 HS-THT.

The flight departed Bangkok at 22:44 and landed in Sydney at 10:04, ahead of its scheduled 10:20 arrival after an 8 hour 21 minute sector.

Thailand to Australia.
Overnight long-haul.
A smooth A350 touchdown to finish the journey.

There’s something about watching an international arrival complete the final seconds of a long flight — especially when it ends this cleanly.

🔥 Two RAAF Wedgetails Move Through The Williamtown Heat ✈️👀

On the 7th of May, TheGroundCrew captured two Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetails, registered A30-004 and A30-005, preparing for departure from RAAF Base Williamtown on Runway 30.

The afternoon light was harsh, but it gave the movement a completely different atmosphere — heat haze rising behind the aircraft, golden reflections catching across the fuselage, and the unmistakable Wedgetail radar array standing tall through the shimmer.

What made this one stand out was the operational feel of it. No airshow display, no staged flypast — just two RAAF airborne surveillance aircraft rolling out from Williamtown in real conditions.

Harsh light, heat haze, two Wedgetails, and a very different look at RAAF activity in Newcastle’s backyard.
