Would you believe me if I say that Menka is completing a decade on earth and stepping into her 11th Year in January 2024?! I can't believe it's happening!
Over the last few years, Menka lost some of the major handloom weavers due to Covid-19 pandemic, who chose different professions (RMG/other) leaving their ancestral occupation (a pure handloom weaver) as it has been a continuous struggle to survive within a saturated market filled with machine-loom sarees. When I look back, I see a decade long work of Menka with a persistent goal to promote and save our handloom industry. But when I looked closer, I saw that in the last 10 years I could only reach 50,000 people of Bangladesh, representing 0.025% of a population of 20 crore. Look at this tiny number: 0.025% of 2,00,000,000 people; it just makes me wonder why? When others are participating in the money talks, oftentimes I find myself questioning my entire existence, have I failed miserably? I don't know. I wished I knew that answer or maybe I will never find that answer. Perhaps not surprisingly, I can only work, each day, every day, with the thought that I am truly blessed to have these 0.025% people with me through Menka, at least they are here, trying to support Menka's cause wholeheartedly. Last 6 months of 2023, I tried to emphasize on the existing marginalized handloom weavers and artisans who worked tirelessly for the brand, maybe on a very small scale, but still it's my privilege that I can look at my shortcomings with honesty and with a hope for a better future because I know deep in my heart that I am not going to spend a second playing cat and mouse the time I have on this earth. All I ask from you is to send a little prayer for me.
I wish you all a very Happy New Year, and I will see you next year with more beautiful sarees as ever. I love you all so much!
