“Where water flows, equality grows." - United Nations Secretary-General’s message to mark World Water Day on 22 March 2026. But in many indigenous communities, the absence of clean water turns distance into burden—and inequality into daily reality.

In the remote hills of Bandarban, Chittagong, Bangladesh - water is no longer within reach but something that must be chased. Indigenous communities traverse long, steep paths each day to collect drinking water as springs and streams continue to disappear. This scarcity is not incidental; it is the result of deforestation, environmental degradation, and increasingly erratic rainfall driven by climate change. What is vanishing here is not only water, but also time, labor, and the delicate bond between people and their land. Where water flows, equality grows—but in its absence, distance becomes a burden, and inequality is lived every day.
