Australia has officially passed a new law requiring major streamers like Netflix, Disney Plus, and HBO Max to invest a chunk of their Australian revenue into original Aussie content. Platforms with over one million local subscribers will now have to spend 10 percent of their Australian costs, or 7.5 percent of their revenue, on local productions.

The goal is simple: make sure Australian stories stay visible on the biggest streaming services. Streamers who don’t comply can face massive fines, and they’ve been given three years to fully adjust.

Industry leaders are calling it a landmark day for Australian screen storytelling, saying the new rules finally level the playing field and guarantee more homegrown shows for viewers. 🎬🇦🇺
