Some captures that didn't make the final cut in the story about modern architecture on Long Beach Island, NJ.
A playground of modernism, LBI's unique audacious architecture style is under threat from an onslaught of modern meh mega mansions that are popping up all over the island.
The story is a must read! Beautifully written by Michael Harmon. Link in bio.

Happy Memorial Day from the Jersey Shore 🌊☀️

I used to have a summer share on Long Beach Island a long time ago. Coming back to photograph it for this story felt like a full-circle moment and a slightly bittersweet one.
LBI is home to one of the densest collections of modernist and eclectic residential architecture in the country. Decades of bold, inventive building by architects who understood this landscape and ran with it. But that legacy is under quiet pressure. A wave of new construction — conservative in style, safe in ambition — is gradually replacing what made this island architecturally singular. It's a tension that plays out block by block, and once those homes are gone, they're gone.

Photographing it for this story felt urgent in that way. A reminder to look closely while there's still so much to see.

This piece was a genuine collaboration. Working alongside a talented writer Michael Harmon, with editors at who brought real care to the story. That kind of partnership makes all the difference.

The story is live now. Link in bio.

A house that grows out of the Rhode Island coastline like it was always meant to be there - part mid-century, part monolith, all atmosphere. The story of the Tilting House Rock house continues to intrigue and inspire.

Happy 100th birthday Route 66! This one of the gas station in Rancho Cucamonga, California never got published but has always been on my mind! If you want to go see it don't forget to stop by The Magic Lamp Inn, another classic roadside joint from that era.

These images from reporter and documentary filmmaker David France's former East Village home has been languishing in the archives until now. Meticulously designed by Leyden Lewis , I was drawn to the textures, colors and the clever design elements of the home and of course the unmistakable extension of Mr. France's work and love for art.

An unpublished image from a story shot in the wilderness of Long Island's North Fork. Although this photograph never saw the light of day, it always reminds me of spring and the feeling of renewal.

Stephen Chu designs buildings that feel like they grew out of the ground they sit on. As Design Partner at , he led the most significant renovation of the Delacorte Theater in its 63-year history -- wrapping Central Park's home for Free Shakespeare in the Park in reclaimed redwood pulled from decommissioned NYC water towers.
I photographed him twice for the : first on the construction site, standing in the middle of his own building before it became a building -- the curved facade starting to take shape. And later, on the stoop of his Queens home.
Two portraits. Two places. This is why I shoot environmental portraits in settings that add to the story behind the person.
