The last rites of noted photographer Raghu Rai at Lodhi Cremation Ground in Delhi, who chronicled the journey of a maturing Indian nation through his lens.

Widely regarded among the most influential photographers of modern India, Rai died Sunday at 83 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Rai’s journey as a photographer spanned more than six decades, during which he closely documented the lives of the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He believed each photograph had to be different—an act of discovery, and an attempt to create 'something new', he'd said in a 2022 interview. In his practice, he made himself fully available to the moment—physically, mentally and spiritually—allowing life to unfold before his lens.

The photographer, who never left his house without a camera, last year offered advice to emerging photographers--don’t shoot endlessly in a chase of Instagram followers. Instead, attach meaning to every frame.
