During the Big Bend Open Road Race in Texas, driver John Anhalt pushed his 2019 Corvette C7 ZR1 to its limits, and beyond. Over a 118-mile run, the car averaged 173 mph and hit speeds as high as 213 mph on open stretches of highway.
That kind of performance comes at a cost. By the end of the run, the intense heat generated from the car’s exhaust setup began damaging the rear bodywork, with the bumper showing clear signs of melting from the sustained high-speed load.
The C7 ZR1 is already one of the most extreme Corvettes ever built, powered by a supercharged V8 producing 755 horsepower. Anhalt took it further with additional upgrades, increasing output and preparing the car for long-duration, high-speed driving rather than short bursts.
The event itself isn’t a traditional race track. It runs across a closed stretch of highway, with long straights and fast corners that demand both speed and precision. Maintaining that pace over distance, while managing fuel and control, is part of the challenge.
Despite the damage, the run was a success, setting a new course average record and showing just how far a production-based car can be pushed when everything is dialed in.
