Behind the decent shots: the not so decent finning technique.

During my recent depth training camp in Tenerife, I finally had the opportunity to take my camera back into the Ocean, and challenge my underwater photography skills in real-life.

Turns out capturing my home pool floor tiles for the past couple of years was not such a bad preparation for the big Blue.

🎥 Thank you Caro Rodrigues Gonzalez for capturing me in action, doing what I love most 📸

Anthropogenic pressure

Among the well-known threats related to boat traffic and acoustic pollution in the South-Western coast of Tenerife, the resident populations of cetaceans are also no strangers to fishing net entanglement.

As displayed on the first 3 images, this pilot whale's very distinctive dorsal fin shows signs of injuries, most likely because it's been previously entangled in a fishing net.

Much to our surprise, we also came across a floating dead shark on our way back to the harbour that same day (images 4 & 5).The arrowhead dogfish (deania profundorum) is a deep-sea dwelling species of shark, found from depths of 600 meters and beyond.

It had a hook still stuck in its mouth, which indicates it was a bycatch of deep fishing lines. The fishermen that caught the animal probably didn't want it and released it in the water, but it did not survive the brutal change of pressure that occurred between his usual habitat in the abyss, and the surface.

While it is clear our resident population of pilot whales take the center stage as the emblematic species they are, let us not forget all the rich biodiversity that make this place so unique in Europe.

All the more reasons why the Fonsalia project of building a macro port right in the middle of the Teno-Rasca marine conservation area is such an abomination that would have utterly devastating and irreversible consequences on all this precious wildlife.

Increasing risk of collisions with cetaceans and sea turtles, noise pollution and constant pollutant discharges are but a few of the threats faced by all these beautiful animals - some of which already endangered.

However, it is not too late to make your voice heard and help prevent this disaster from happening.

Healthy oceans and marine ecosystems are vital to sustain life worldwide, therefore we must do everything we can to protect whatever is left of it.

Yet another breathtaking morning out at sea.

An inquisitive pilot whale juvenile approached our boat to check us out before gently swimming back into the big blue.

Sometimes you just need that one interaction to get very lucky.

Incredible footage of a pilot whale pod as they're best observed: from beneath the surface.

Thankfully, diving with wild cetaceans is forbidden everywhere in Spain as they are protected (at least on paper, in reality it's whole different thing, but that's a topic for another big debate). Much to my own regret, but so much better for the animals.

However, they're occasionally curious enough to come literally within arm's reach from the boat, allowing us to sometimes try and throw the GoPro underwater.

Thanks so much to Misael, marine biologist, captain and owner of Biosean for nailing the footage while I was juggling with my camera to get the fin shots 📸

To celebrate world photography day, here are few snaps of me in some of my favourite environments: the Arctic, the ocean, and nature in general. I've come an insanely long way to end up where I am today, and it's only the very beginning of my lifelong dream journey towards conservation.

Indeed, I very much intend to always do everything in my power to create my own opportunities to keep fighting for the preservation of our natural wonders - my camera and words being my weapons of choice. If nature is truly resilient, then so am I.

Couldn't think of a better time than world photography day to finally take the jump and create my own Facebook photography business page. 🎉

Welcome everyone, and please don't forget to share and spread the love 📷 💞
