Anyone visiting the Cornelius Chapel in the Museum Sint-Janshospitaal this week will see researchers at work live.
As part of the 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 project, we are conducting further material-technical research.
Together with the University of Antwerp , we are currently using Macroscopic X-Ray Fluorescence scanning (abbreviated MA-XRF scanning) to learn more about our paintings.
MA-XRF is a technique that can map the chemical elements in the paint layers (as lead, copper, gold, iron and mercury), from which we can then deduce which pigments have been used.
This allows us to get to know a work of art down to the smallest detail and to preserve it properly for future generations.
