DT Ceramics

DT Ceramics Brussels based ceramist, photographer and beekeeper. My love for the earth and its elements has brou I have been a photographer for over twenty-five years.

My work for the media and NGOs has sent me all-over the world. In my webshop you'll find limited editions of fine art prints. All prints are signed and numbered. Ceramics is my latest passion. I find it very satisfying to transform a hunk of clay into a beautiful piece of art.

Fresh from the kiln ✨

Here are some of my newest vases, getting ready for my stand in Kortrijk on April 26th.

Made with my favorite stoneware clay bodies and finished with a simple transparent glaze on the inside — letting the raw beauty of the clay speak for itself.

Working with mixed clays always comes with a little extra risk… cracks can happen. So every time one of these pieces comes out whole, it feels like a small miracle. I celebrate each one — sometimes even with a kiss.

These vases feel like my babies, and I hope they’ll find homes where they can live long, beautiful lives.

How to limit my climate footprint as a ceramist and reduce the energy consumption of my ovens? This is a question that I ask myself frequently.

In the past year, I installed solar panels, but what else could I do? With a little advice of .bxl I started changing my baking practice drastically.

For years I had been baking ceramics at the recommended temperature :
Bisque fire : 80 C/hr till 600 & 100 till 950.
Glaze fire : 150 C/hr til 1050 & 60 till 1240.

I started with skipping the bisque fire for simple works like bows, cups or mugs. It did not work well for some of my glazes or clay bodies but for the ones I use most frequently I encountered zero problems. Skipping the bisque fire for those pieces has saved me since then a huge amount of energy and I do regret not having tested this years ago.

I went a little further and also gradually speeded up the temperature of my bisque fire till 110 C/hr instead of 80 and I stop baking at 750 C instead of 950. Again : I didn’t see any difference on most of my pieces. For works baked in one time till cone 7/8, I bake today at 130 C/hr till 1050 and then slow down a bit till 110 C/hr.

Hope this info will help other ceramists with reducing their climate impact. But please, don’t copy my baking charts at once! Make multiple tests with personal work that can easily be redone and change your charts gradually. And don’t blame me if something goes wrong 😅

Have you tested this too with positive or negative results? Or have you found other ways to reduce your climate impact as a ceramist? Please share your experience in a comment. I would love to hear from you. Thanks for reading!

Another nigra vase, hand graved with my little hands.
For those interested in my ceramics :
a selection will be for sale this Sunday 15 Dec at .bxl in Boitsfort : there’s a Christmas market 11 am to 6 pm. Welcome!
And for my followers from till March ‘25 : pop-up store by .co.za in the Bennesteeg 12. Opening hours 11 am to 6 pm, Wednesdays to Saturdays. An opportunity to see the amazing designs of the very sympathetic Jean-Denis, with influences from Africa and Latin-America. I ❤️ all his creations 🙂

I made a new Nigra vase. Do you like it? The Nigra clay from sibelco is still my favourite clay. I think it is so beautiful it doesn’t need any glazing, except for a transparant glaze inside.

For those interested in learning my technique, I’ll be giving workshops in 2025 in the following ateliers:

Pepaceramics, Zwijndrecht, 2 March
Atelier des tropiques, Bxl, 29&30 March
Keramiekatelier Craquelé, Leuven, 5&6 April
Kafé Keramiek, Brugge, 26&27 April

I’ll be happy to teach you how to use ‘colombins’ to make a big vase on the pottery wheel. This technique has so many advantages: you can go as big as you want with very little effort, with a bit of practice you can give your vase almost any shape, you can use any clay, even clay with heavy chamotte…

If you want to make some bigger works with little effort, these workshops are made for you 🙂
