URUGUAY⠀

Uruguay became an adventurous destination. The country of legalized ma*****na, maté and a lot of beaches. Polina was working in my hostel in Buenos Aires and we decided to hitchhike together through this unknown place for the both of us. After visiting pittoresk Colonia Del Sacramento we took our permanent marker and a piece of cardboard to write down our first destination. ⠀

Pretty fast we were heading to the east where we seemed to get stuck a little further than the capital, Montevideo. A very gentle guy from Czech Republic, André, dropped us off in Ciudad de la Costa and here it took a while before a first car pulled over. A white, old Lada showed up. Alfredo behind the wheel, two dogs in the trunk. He gave us two options. Driving us to the peage a little ahead, or taking us to his place for a real Uruguayan barbecue with his family and a place to stay overnight. Option B, of course!⠀
It started of a little bizarre with two giant dog heads staring at me in the trunk of the car, but after finding out Alfredo’s job as a dog whisperer, he showed us some beautiful spots of his hometown before spoiling us with a giant steak and a warm family dinner.⠀
We continued our journey by finding out the weird ‘shoes’ Crocs were very trendy within the upper class at that point and after a drunk night in La Barra, we arrived in Barra de Valizas. That’s the place where I took the picture of the cute little frog. In the morning we headed barefoot to Cabo Polonio. The place of freedom to visit when in Uruguay. There are no cars, no roads and electricity is only available during the day. And there are sea lions!⠀

The place where I celebrated my 28th birthday, where we got stuck between two rivers in the dark and had to be saved by a boat, catched fire flies and where I felt like Michael Jackson, dancing on luminous sand full of plankton.⠀

...the story continues...⠀

Satisfied with the result we went out for dinner afterwards. This time she would reveal the story of her life. Born in a violent Colombia, she had lost a lot of her relatives. Thanks to her education and library at home, before the age of twelve she had read the most important literature from around the world. For more than an hour I was listening to her story attentively and writing notes not to forget any details. Even though she survived a lot of dramas, she was satisfied about life. Always waking up with a smile, no matter what. Her believe in Mother Earth, Pachamama, is bigger than anything. The mountains are the breasts, the snow tops the ni***es. We all drink the water coming from the melting snow and as we all share this water we are connected as brothers and sisters. I think she uses her age of 520 years old as a metaphor during her work shops, because of all experiences in life she has been through in combination with a huge believe in Mother Earth.⠀

At that point she was 69 years old and she’s still going strong. She never went back to her country of birth and officially lives in Bolivia now, but she’s traveling around Latin America mostly, sharing her life lessons.⠀

, thanks a lot!⠀

KIHILI
CUZCO_2015⠀

For six weeks I lived in Cuzco, Peru. Straight away I felt at home in this city. Sharing an apartment with the best roomies ever: and .one . ⠀

Joining Proyecto Peru to learn Spanish and to become a sports teacher at Azul Wasi, a foster home just outside the city. Experiencing the greatest adventures with new friends from all over the world.⠀

One day Hans told me about a lady of 520 years old. She had been sharing stories of her life during a workshop and her story attracted my attention. I really wanted to meet her and so I did. ⠀

Kihili. Full of energy and enthusiasm. We started talking in Spanglish, a combo of Spanish and English, and went on for a while with mutual interest. When I told her I was a photographer she wanted to make an appointment straight away. For years she’d been walking around with the idea of doing a photo series of expressions and emotions. It was a date. I had to think about the photographical input, she would be the model.⠀

In a friends’ bedroom we created a primitive photo studio. Books as a tripod for the camera and on a chair behind me with a torcher in her hand for the lightning.⠀
For an hour it became completely dark. Only one light spot, constantly projected on Kihili’s face. She went into a trance and an unforgettable atmosphere entered the room. Intense. As if she was reviving her life again, from childhood to where she was right now. From happiness to real sorrow. From proudness to disappointment. Very concentrated I tried to get the focus right every second to capture the expressions at the heat of the moment.⠀
⠀..the story continues under the next post...

BRAZIL_2016⠀
Rio De Janeiro / Florianopolis⠀

By traveling solo around the world, I’ve learned a lot of important things. The most important one: you’re never alone. The best moments aren’t because of a unique spot, the best moments you experience because of the people surrounding you.⠀

One day I went around Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, to discover the city, but even more to decide on my next destination. I took the last seat in a bus to Florianopolis. On the road - bus or flight - I always entered my bubble. This was me-time and for a few hours I didn’t open myself up to others. I took time to read or watch a movie.⠀

For a long time I could stay in this bubble on my way to Brazil, until the lady next to me was lost for a second. I started talking to the gently looking people on the other side of the hallway. Three Swedish girls, , , and one Swedish adonis, . Slowly we started talking and I kinda forced myself into the group to join them to their hostel, hoping there would a bed available for me too. The first steps into our friendship were a little clumsy, but soon we became inseparable. ⠀

For an entire month we stayed together. After creating an entire family in our hostel, we went from cruising around the peninsula to skydiving in Iguazu, the crazy caipi-boat and mud massages in Paraty and ending our journey in Rio, carnival, what else?⠀

Enjoy the sunset of Ipanema while I’m gonna daydream of visiting this beautiful quartet in Sweden, it’s been way too long my friends!⠀

SURFERS PARADISE_2016⠀

In Australia a new adventure started after five months traveling through Latin America. This story is not about a picture. It’s not about a country. It’s about friendship turning into family. ⠀

Right before leaving on a world trip, best friends Pieter & Hanne told me I had inspired them. They were about to travel the world as well, but with their 3 kids. As traveling around the world is still pretty rare, we decided we had to meet each other somewhere. Sydney became that somewhere. ⠀

Goosebumps are still there when I think back of that moment. Everybody had so many stories to tell, so we decided to stay together for six entire weeks. Traveling around in a camper, being one big happy family.⠀
As they were traveling as a group of five, three of them age 8 to 12, things had to be scheduled a little bit in advance. So the camper was arranged. I could easily just take a seat. No strings attached we said. I was solo traveling without any limits and all of a sudden there was a little bit of structure again. But I can’t find words to describe how amazing this time was. No single second I thought of leaving them before finishing our tour around, and luckily they felt the same way by not kicking me out. ⠀

Sometimes I acted as a third parent, most of the times I was the fourth kid. Fooling each other, naked bike ride, hiking, everyday hummus and wine, koala spotting, black suits and glasses, homework, photos and videos, dancing, singing nineties songs, Helene Fischer, ....⠀
These pictures were taken during a beach hike to Surfers Paradise where we all enjoyed a shared passion to the fullest: people watching.⠀
I’m looking forward to travel the West Coast together!⠀
Nele, it’s your birthday!, Seppe, Lore, Pieter & Hanne (yep, from young to old 😆) you’re the best! Thanks for everything!⠀

PUERTO NATALES_2015⠀

I’m in the very south of Chile. Not yet the real end of the world, Ushuaia, but Puerto Natales feels even more this way than the most southern city there is. It’s the easiest access to enter the famous hike to Torres del Paine. One of the most desolate cities I’ve been to. The streets are empty and the paint is flaking of the wooden houses. Everything feels grey. At one hand a place not to stay longer than that one inevitable night, photographically worth it to stay for a month and get to know all stories found behind the walls. Something went wrong with our reservation in the hostel for that night. It wasn’t the only hostel around and the owner found us another place to stay. I felt like a kid again, arriving at grandmother’s and grandfather’s place. Old bibles, old- school maps of the world and encyclopedias surrounding the leather seats where an old charming lady was knitting all day long. Old-fashioned wooden beds making a lot of noise every breath you take, but all indulgence at the same time. Waking up the next morning with the warmest feeling ever we could take our breakfast with the other guests in the kitchen where the handyman was taking a rest in front of the stove. The way he was standing there, the scenery. I just had to take my camera and capture this moment forever.⠀
