This is a photo series I made for the Collibri Foundation in collaboration with VECO and Colruyt.

The Collibri project ‘Riz du Benin, Riz de demain’ focuses on training Beninese youngsters to become young farmers and entrepreneurs in their own region. A story and photo-reportage on our Collibri youngsters in Benin, West-Africa.

Rice, rice baby 🌿 Jocélyn has a beautiful farm outside of Cove. The Zou region is green and lush even in the dry season. Although this might change rapidly due to drought and global warming. Water is scarce and on high demand throughout the whole country. In dry regions people have no other choice than to walk for hours for a jerrycan of water.

“65 is the average age of farmers in Canada, and there are not enough young farmers to replace them… How did we get here?”

This summer Spencer and I traveled around North America in a old truck to make a short film and photo story on young farmers and sustainable agriculture. We traveled through incredibly beautiful places and met the most admirable people.

We learned so much more about growing food, gathering people and importance of sustainable agriculture. Have a look at the short film made by my wonderfully talented friend Spencer.

Of course, there are challenges and I think everyone faces them. If they have never faced a challenge someone should give them one. Everyone is going to learn something from it, if we look at it the right way.

So my regard to that is to learn from others, live through challenges and be present with the rawness of life. Because life is epically challenging in its nature.

Our generation wants to interface. We see the things that are wrong and instead of escaping we choose to lead by example. We feel like we don’t have any other choice then to fix what we have.
