I’m apparently pretty good at negotiating with the weather — or at least that’s what I told this lovely couple the day before their wedding. 😄

And it seems I wasn’t wrong: on this September day, the rain started falling literally as soon as we finished our photoshoot. ☔️

Grand-Place was packed with tourists, so after the ceremony we had a quick little portrait session at the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and in the hotel lobby.

I only wish I’d had more time. I had about half an hour with them, and honestly, I could have photographed this charismatic couple for hours and hours. 🤍

This wedding was also when I decided to experiment with direct flash — and I have to say, I’m really happy with the result. ✨

When I worked as a wedding photographer in the Caribbean from 2012 to 2016, capturing couples from North America, I anticipated a spectacular parade of exquisite, diverse designer gowns. Instead, I faced a stunning surprise: 99% of brides chose the exact same silhouette—the mermaid gown. Why is that?Too often, in pursuit of generic trends or Pinterest stereotypes, brides trap themselves within the limits of "mermaid" or "Disney princess" styles. But the truth is, the wrong dress can completely ruin your wedding day.I still remember brides who felt deeply self-conscious about their arms, yet chose strapless, sleeveless gowns anyway. On the happiest day of their lives, they were consumed by discomfort—begging me not to shoot them with their arms raised (like during the bouquet toss) and later asking to retouch their arms and forearms on the final photos.

But why put yourself through that when the world of bridal fashion is so much wider? For absolutely every body type, there is a perfect, flattering silhouette. The moment I stopped being a photographer and became a witness. 🪔

Shooting my first Indian wedding, I'll admit it — I was nervous. So many rituals, so much symbolism, so little room to miss a single second. And then came Sindoor Daan.

This is the emotional and spiritual climax of a Bengali wedding — the moment that legally and spiritually seals the marriage. The groom applies red vermilion to the bride's hair parting, invoking the energy of Goddess Parvati to bless the couple with protection, love, and fertility for life. Then he presents the Lojja Bostro, a pristine silk saree, as a public promise to protect her dignity and honor forever. With that same saree, he creates the Ghomta — a veil that shields her from negative energy (nazar) as she steps into this new chapter of her life.

As a photographer, this is not a moment you shoot. It's a moment you catch.

I learned to watch for:
🔴 The Application — a macro shot on the groom's fingers as the sindoor falls along her hairline, red powder drifting like something sacred
🧵 The Saree Unfolding — his hands opening the ornate silk border, seconds before the drape
🤍 The Veiling — a slow, steady tracking shot as the ghomta settles over her face
👁️ The Threshold — her eyes, right as the vermilion touches her skin. That's the whole wedding in one frame.

No rehearsal. No second take. Just trust that your instinct is fast enough.

I walked into this wedding not knowing the rituals by heart. I walked out understanding why they still matter.

My heart is so full right now!
