Transforming Sofia’s History with Light, Countdown to LUNAR

Looking back at some favorite frames from past editions of the LUNAR Festival of Lights as Sofia prepares to light up again from September 17th to September 20th.

There’s something incredible about watching iconic landmarks from Kvadrat 500 and the National Library reflected to the historic facades along Tsar Osvoboditel completely shift under 3D projection mapping. The contrast between grand classical architecture and vibrant, glowing digital art turns night walks through the city into an immersive gallery experience.

Throwing it back to an unforgettable night at the Surva festival in Kosharevo from January 2025.

There’s an ancient, primal energy in the air when night falls and the village square lights up with blazing wooden torches. Shooting in the freezing dark while snow falls through the warm firelight made for a incredible scene... catching the survakari clad in traditional sheepskins, heavy copper bells, and carrying torches to chase away the dark. The sound of the bells ringing in the cold night is something you have to experience in person.

Capturing Missher Rueva framed by that intense violet spotlight slicing straight through the thick stage fog is everything I love about intimate venue photography. The lighting in small clubs is always a wild card, but when it hits like this, it locks in a raw, cinematic mood that’s impossible to replicate.

A Field That Turned Into the Night Sky

At Vrana Park, the ground began to glow as if it had its own pulse. Hundreds of constellations settled quietly in the grass, while sharp blue beams crossed the sky above... precise, distant, almost celestial.

This moment from the SofiaLights felt suspended in time. No sound, no rush. Just light reshaping space, inviting you to slow down and look longer than usual. For a few minutes, the park wasn’t part of the city, it was something else entirely.

The brain loves playing tricks in the dark, a phenomenon known as pareidolia.

At first glance, this pile of trash bags next to a street bin looks startlingly like a person curled up on the pavement, resting their head against the stone. Stripping the shot down to high-contrast black and white amplifies the shadows and highlights those anatomical contours. A surreal, eerie moment of accidental street art hiding in plain sight.

Drenched in deep blue stage lights, the band locked into their signature psychedelic fairytale sound, taking the crowd on a hypnotic, seven-track voyage. Capturing that exact moment, with arms raised in the crowd, smiles on stage, and raw basslines ringing through the room, summed up the whole vibe. An incredible live energy to shoot.
