This amazing world with its majestic mountains, delicate flowers, splendid animals, and elegant people is all the work of a master Craftsman. My goal in photography is to capture glimpses of God's glory revealed through His creation and share them with others so they, too, will honor Him. Sometimes, that is simply through the image itself, but I enjoy pairing Scripture and heavenly-minded quotes t

o my photos as well. By profession, I am focused on fulfilling the Great Commission by getting the Gospel to those who have not yet had opportunity to hear it. The Apostle Paul exhorts us in I Corinthians 10:31 to do everything for the glory of God, so my hobby of choice must also reflect that calling. My focus is generally landscape and wildlife, although I do ministry-focused portraits as well.

Blue Jay's Bath

There is a principle in wildlife photography that says you should choose a choose a location (based on foreground, background, and light) and then wait for (or call in) the subject you want to photograph. It sounds nice in theory, but I have two problems with it: 1.) I can't dedicate that much time to a hobby, and 2.) The birds bathe where the birds bathe. 🤷🏼

A collection of six-legged friends I found in my patch of common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) this afternoon.

Snowberry clearwing (Hemaris diffinis)
Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele)
Pipevine swallowtail (Battus philenor)
Red milkweed beetles (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) caught in an intimate moment 🤭
A skipper, possibly Delaware (Anatrytone logan)
A bumblebee, probably two-spotted (Bombus bimaculatus)

Unlike the little chippy I posted the other day, this squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) was very hesitant and, ultimately, unwilling to come close enough to get any goodies from my tray. Unbeknownst to him, he was plenty close for a nice portrait. 😄

As promised, here is one of many shots I got of this great blue heron (Ardea herodias) this morning at sunrise! It was about 20 feet up in the top of a redcedar that hangs out over the lake, one their favorite places to hang out. The breeze came up with the sunrise and I had to be pretty quick to keep the boat oriented and still enough to get a decent shot, but it worked out fine!

I can't remember when I last had my camera out in the boat (last summer?). I rebuilt the transom this spring, so it was out of the water for a couple months and out of commission awhile before that. This was a great way to start the day and one of the local herons was content to model for me a good long while at sunrise... pics later.

This little chipmunk (Tamias striatus) made about 10 trips across the creek, hopping from stone to stone, to fill its cheeks with seeds from my tray and take them back to its nest in the forest beyond. In the heavy shade, it was difficult to get decent pics, so I was glad when it paused briefly at this spot. I'll put an action shot from a return trip in the comments.

I haven't been posting here much because two of my students asked me to photograph their wedding last weekend and I've been absolutely swamped processing more than 2200 photos! 🤪 It's definitely not my cup of tea -- much too stressful 😆 -- but it's nice to be a blessing once in a while. Anyway, here's a peaceful pic of a wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) from last week. If you missed the video I posted of its song, check it out!
