Grassland Safari Lodge Botswana Grassland Safari Lodge, is a little world of wander Herds of a few hundred animals can be seen in our area. At the lodge is a breeding herd of 400+ eland cows!

It is widely recognised that the San are the oldest “living” culture still surviving and provides us modern man a very unique insight and mirror to our own past. Situated on a private game area on the western side of the Central Kalahari Game reserve allows us to share with our guests, years of first hand knowledge of this truly unique eco-systems collectively utilised by wildlife and the San (Bus

hman). Game drives (Day & Afternoon) – The Kalahari is a semi desert and the vegetation changes from bushy acacia areas to open grasslands. Antelope that are regularly seen are gemsbok, eland, kudu, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, springbok, giraffe and much more! Predators in the area are – lions, cheetah, leopard, caracal, serval. Birdlife in the Kalahari is just as exiting as the animals – bateleur, matial eagle, korhaan, tawny eagles, secretary birds, kori bastards, ostrich. During the dry winter months thousands of Sandgrouses frequent the drinking hole at lodge and is a spectacle to be seen! At Grassland Safari Lodge we offer the following fascinating San activities:

The san (bushmen) ladies take us on a food gathering and medicinal use experience. They dig roots, collect seeds and nuts, pick berries, search for fungus they use in their flint stones, they make fire and cook some of the food we found on the walk etc. The men show us animals tracks and explain their every move, they show us dung, collect plants to make rope, do traps, show and explain hunting skills in a very exciting way! San games – The men and women have a few different games which they demonstrate and guests are actively encouraged to join in the fun. Sticks, wild melons, dung and ropes are used.

Grassland Safari Lodge sits in the Central Kalahari, and it was one of those places that reminded me why I travel in the first place.

Rhino tracking on foot.
Wild dog conservation.
A genuinely meaningful San experience.
Horseback riding through the bush.
And evenings watching wildlife come to the waterhole.

But more than anything, I loved the sense of space.

This is a locally owned lodge, deeply connected to its surroundings — exactly the kind of place I wanted to include when I rebuilt this journey after travelling the route myself.

I’m taking a maximum of 6 travellers per departure this November.
