Happy one year to .midwives

I smile extra big when I see “ solstice midwives “ on a birth photography client’s questionnaire.

Time and time again, I’ve had the privilege of seeing them in action as I photograph a birth.

It’s always the same feeling: calm, steady, deeply supportive care that fills the entire room.

The way they hold space, advocate, and truly see the families they serve never goes unnoticed.

You all make such a difference in the way these stories unfold and the moms of the Fraser valley are so lucky to have you.

Two of their midwives supported me during the pregnancy and birth of my 3rd child so I can also personally say the midwifes there are amazing from a clients perspective as well, I couldn’t have dreamed of a better team.

I can’t wait for the upcoming births this year where I’ll get to see them in action once again and for the years ahead witnessing their light in our community 🥰

3ish years ago we did a motherhood shoot in this very spot. Fast forward to one more baby and one on the way and we did another as part of her maternity session. 🥺

It never gets old, being able to capture the magic in your everyday activities, the rhythms of your life in this season that happen all the time but you rarely stop to soak in.

I was just waking up to watch the Canada mens hockey game when I got the call from Emily’s wife.

“Hi, we are at the hospital in room number ____. You should come”

“ alright, I’m on my way”

“Okay bye” click.

🏃‍♀️ When it’s anyone other than the labouring mom calling me that’s usually a sign to get my butt moving, as likely things are in full swing.

So I hustled over to the hospital and made it there about 30 min before I witnessed this little one arrive earth side!

I may be biased because I have a February baby myself, but they are pretty special 😍

So I lied. I won’t be posting the “Motherhood minis” announcement I said I would be posting this week…

That’s because well, I’ve never had this happen before, but every single spot was snatched up by those of you who responded and asked to be part of the “first dibs” group on my instagram stories Monday 🫣.

Like, WHAT? Truly honoured. I remember only a few years ago I’d struggle to fill just 50% of the spots whenever I offered minis after weeks of sharing and promoting them. 🥺 So I’m truly a little shook and a lot grateful that so many of you were excited about them and booked all 12 slots up so fast!!

This last year I’ve been trying to celebrate every little milestone and win and this feels like one of those I should stop and celebrate. So 🎂 🎉 .

Also a little bit of an apology to those who missed out or didn’t see my story 🫣 🫶🏼

That said, if that’s you I’m toying with an idea I’ve been sitting on for a while, and have been trying to figure out the details for, so keep your eyes out for that announcement maybe soon-ish! .. or ya know, message me to get on the list 😅🫣

Again, I cannot convey the huge amount of gratitude I feel towards each and every one of you who support me 🥺 ♥️ Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Also please enjoy these maternity photos I’m currently obsessed with 🥰 In-home sessions will always be a favourite.

Newborn sessions ( especially with siblings) are one of the longer sessions I offer. That’s quite intentional.

The slow pace of them really allows for the tenderness and emotion to shine authentically and any breaks for outfit changes, soothing and feeding ( baby or siblings) don’t feel like “cutting into your time” instead they become a part of the rhythm and story.

Sure I capture lots of more posed and directed moments, but I also think the moments in between are filled with a lot of magic. Like all these images you see above!

During a newborn shoot I do a lot of just placing mom/dad and baby somewhere with lighting I like etc and then stepping back and letting the kids interact naturally or giving some fun prompts to get them engaged before I let things unfold.

With siblings in the mix it’s important the session is low pressure and we create a relaxed environment where they can join in, or take space as they feel inclined.

This new tiny human is a big change for them and throw a photographer into the mix and all the sudden kids can feel overwhelmed with how they are suppose to be acting.

Being silly and engaging with their natural curiosity and personalities goes a long way toward them feeling comfortable and relaxed, and therefore allows me to capture moments that are authentically them.

There’s something so magical about those first couple weeks postpartum.
The days and nights spent getting to know this tiny new human you been dreaming about for the last 9 months. Finding your rhythm balancing a new baby with your older kids, everyone settling in to their new role all while soaking in all their tiny fresh details, and the addicting smell of their sweet little heads ( iykyk).

I strive for every newborn shoot to honour that, to really capture how life feels in this moment so you have a gallery full of authentic feeling images you’ll treasure for the rest of your life as your babies grow.

So trust me, you want a little bit of chaos, snack breaks, and letting them run wild! They will be some of your favourite photos ♥️

Unfortunately I see this all to often 👇🏼

You think your child wont tolerate photos for very long or doesn’t like them so a mini session would be the perfect solution. Get in, get a few good photos and ✅

But if my 10 years as a Fraser valley photographer 📸 who has done countless family photoshoots specifically with young children has taught me anything it’s that unfortunately, often that is not the case.

Part of my job as a photographer is to make sure you are fully prepared and I can provide a great experience.

💞 When you step in front of my camera you can relax and just soak up the quality time with the ones you love knowing I have all the info I need to draw out your families unique connection and personalities. Resulting in a gallery of images that feel true to you.

❌ I would be doing a disservice if I recommended a mini session to every family as one size fits all.

If I did, it would result in an experience for some that goes against what I want to provide. One thats stressful, forced, inauthentic and ends with a gallery that perhaps has “good” images but ones you don’t connect with or love.

💕 Children like the ones above, who are slow to warm, withdraw in front of a 📷 or in contrast, love to run wild and be free, Thrive in the slower paced and relaxed environment that is a full session.

The low pressure, relaxed atmosphere lets them engage naturally when they feel ready / allows us to embrace the chaos and let their big personalities shine. ✨

It’s my goal for the kids to be having so much fun they are a little sad when it ends. My approach to that changes based on each child and family.

That being said mini sessions ARE a great fit for many session types & many children!

Returning clients with kids that already feel at ease with me & my 📷 , older kids, babies in that perfect “ smile and wave at everyone stage”, couples and maternity to name a few.

So as spring and mini sessions approach don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to explore if a mini is the right choice for your family!

⭐️ Below are thoughts pulled & organized from notes scribbled after some beautiful and wonderfully supported births I photographed in 2025:

Support can look like many things, show up in many ways but the impact it can have on a birth experience is profound.

A favourite part about being a birth photographer is how I get to step back and just take in all the details.

•The tender looks.
•Tired but devoted hands applying counter pressure over and over or softly brushing back a strand of hair.
•A warm towel open and waiting for her after a shower.
•The water bottle refilled and brought to dry lips in response to a request not yet spoken.
•Whispers of encouragement given exactly when she needs them most.
•A steady & determined guarding of her peace.

Sometimes support is shown loudly, fiercely with passion but often the most powerful and impactful is shown softly, silently, instinctually. It’s like everyone in the room is working in unison, tuned in towards a shared goal:

💫 Supporting her, Honouring her, Showing up for her. 💫

And there I am, standing back, in awe of the magic before me. Watching how those little details together shape part of the beautiful and unique story unfolding.

Those fleeting moments and small actions that might go unnoticed or be forgotten..I see them, I get to preserve them. I feel a responsibility to honour them.

She may not even be aware of them happening in real time but she will FEEL the affect of them. Her birth experience altered because of them. The magic in these moments will stay with her.

Then once everything settles, I get to give those moments back to her. Little time machines to revisit the same story she lived from a perspective outside herself. Show a part of the story filled with so many big and small, quiet and loud, noticed and unnoticed ways she was held and loved and supported.

I hope she feels that always.

I love being a birth photographer. I feel so lucky. Life is magic. How cool is my job.

There’s nothing like cuddling up with a perfect newborn during these cold ( granted the Fraser valley has had a pretty warm winter so far) winter days. ❄️

After spending a dreamy hour at a newborn shoot gushing over all the tiniest toes and cutest little cheeks I always end up leaving with a bad case of baby fever. There’s just something so magical about those early days with your new baby. I’m so grateful to those that trust me to document such a precious moment in time.

In birth, your world narrows.
Breath. Movement. Strength. Surrender.

While you’re moving through contractions, focusing inward, there’s another story unfolding just outside your field of view.

Your partner watching you with reverence, concern, pride, love all at once.

The whispered “you’ve got this.”
The hand that never lets go.
The breath held as baby is born
The tears they didn’t expect to cry as they meet their baby for the first time.

They watch your transformation.
And in the process, they transform too.

Birth photos let you see what you didn’t get to witness, it captures both stories.
How love showed up in the room.
