Hi friends! You're invited to join us on set as an extra for the filming of a short film by Edmonton-based filmmaker and trans rights advocate, Katie Cutting. Filming is to take place on the afternoon of April 6, 2025, just north of the city of Edmonton.

Katie’s film, Quinonia, explores the intersections of q***r & trans identities with non-affirming Christian churches, particularly in regards to community. Many people with 2SLGBTQIA+ identities find themselves rejected from the communities in which they are raised. This film juxtaposes the impact of bigoted rhetoric on young trans people with the truth that many trans adults know and live: that when one is rejected by their community, they can and often do build a new support network - a chosen family that finds strength in shared experience and unconditional acceptance.

We’ve already filmed one half of the project, but for the second half, we’re in need of lots of people who can be our church-goers. The role will have a small amount of acting, but we’re not expecting only experienced actors to apply - Katie has a ton of experience working with folks who’ve never been on camera before, and is ready to work with you to help get you comfortable on camera. We’re looking for folks who want to take part in supporting trans rights, regardless of your own connection to the trans community.

Note: this scene relies on a sermon that is VERY transphobic, and as such, ask that you please not take part if you feel that this environment may trigger or re-traumatize you. Protect your heart. If you’re unsure, or would like an opportunity to read the script so you know what to expect, please email Katie directly at [email protected].

Before attending, all participants MUST fill out the Google Form, linked below.

If you require transportation to the location, or might be able to help others get to the location, please indicate so on the form.

We will be filming on April 6, 2025. Extras are asked to begin arriving on set at approximately 1:00pm, at the Namao Community Hall. We expect to wrap up filming at approximately 4:00pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Compensation: this position is volunteer only. Unfortunately we do not have the budget to pay any of the cast or crew on this particular film.

Wardrobe: The look we’re going for is conservative and clean. Neutral colours, and simple, modest outfits are ideal. Think “Sunday best” for folks who live in rural/small town Alberta.
Please do not wear clothing with any recognizable logos, artwork, or branding.

This event was the most difficult I've ever photographed. I did my best to select images that show the joyful parts of the service, but as with any loss, there was a lot of sadness present. Michael was a powerful force for change in the world and in my own life. He challenged me to attempt things that I never would have thought to, and to live a full and accomplished life.

He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Some good news to end your week!

Lazy Kitten has been working with The Centre in the lead up to their opening, and it's now here! Check out the website we built for them over at wellnesscentreab.ca

The Centre is a health and wellness hub designed to work with trans and gender diverse populations in Edmonton and the surrounding area. It was started by Dr M Marshall, and works with numerous practitioners and organizations to best meet the needs of trans people. When someone first contacts The Centre, they are set up with an intake and needs assessment meeting whereafter they are connected to applicable service providers - some operating in The Centre itself, and some operating in the wider community.

Trans and gender diverse people are underserved by the medical community as a whole, and as such, there's no better solution than a community centre that is guided by trans people, employs trans people and allies, and which works to reduce wait times, gatekeeping, and trauma associated with seeking medical assistance.

For more info, visit wellnesscentreab.ca. They have no social media presence at this time, but are reachable via email and through the website.
