Taking photos is my way of romanticizing life. It taught me to notice, to be present, that there’s beauty in the ordinary and that nothing lasts forever. Taking photos didn’t change my life..it changed the way I see it.

I feel weird avoiding this topic in my everyday life and then posting publicly about it every few years.. but May was Mental Health Awareness Month & June is Men’s Health Month and I feel obligated to speak up again 🙏🏼

My mental health journey started when I was 13. I've been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, BPD, and ADHD. I struggled with debilitating insomnia for over a decade and it wreaked havoc on both my personal and professional life. Despite having a background in healthcare, it was near impossible for me to maintain a job due to my ongoing battle with mental health.
I went through a lot of phases while trying to cope..from being in complete denial/second opinions/to trying to be an advocate. As time went on..I felt ashamed of myself and avoided the topic with everyone aside from my best friend, Mike.
Mike and I shared an instant, unbreakable bond..like we’d known each other in another lifetime. We would talk in depth about the darkness we both lived with and experienced daily, or we would just be there for each other in silence. We had an unspoken understanding of one another from day 1 and were inseparable for 11 years. Our friendship was raw, complicated, loving and real.

November 27th 2019, Mike died by suîcide. I really can’t begin to describe the profound impact his death had on me..
Grief is so heavy and regret is so cruel.
I left Ontario as soon as I could because I was terrified I wouldn’t survive without him.
Mike was the only person I truly believed when he told me I was beautiful. He was the only person I believed when he told me I was talented. He never stopped encouraging me to pursue photography.
So here I am.

Photography has been instrumental in helping me heal these past few years. Im still not always sure where I stand with my mental health..but I’m finally in a place where I accept myself and feel the uncertainty is okay. I still have really, really good days and really, really bad days..but photography helps keep me grounded and it’s my constant reminder that there is infinite beauty within each of us. Illustrating the depth of a fleeting moment, capturing the lives you lead and the essence of who we all are has helped my mental health more than anything else. Thank you for always trusting me and reminding me that life is art and art connects us all 🫀
