Leave the leaves!

With the warmer weather just around the corner, everyone's itching to get outside and enjoy the giant ball of heat in the sky. But, while you're out there, maybe hold of on part of your yard work for a bit.

That leaf litter and branch debris that you see lying around is actual over-wintering spots for insects like butterflies, fireflies, and bees! And we need to help the bees because they are facing a severe crisis. Approximately 34.7% of native bee species at risk of extinction in North America.

Our native solitary bees spend winter as larvae or adults inside soil, stems, or leaf litter in a state of dormancy called diapause. Kind of like hibernation for insects. About 70% of wild bee species in Nova Scotia nest in the ground, while roughly 30% are cavity nesters in things like stems and branches. So they need that layer of leaves to keep warm!

So if you can hold off raking until temperatures are consistently around 10 degrees Celsius, you'd be doing a wonderful thing not just for bees, but for all of nature.

Around 75–90% of wild plants and trees rely on pollinators, with native bees doing the bulk of that work.
