Research in 90 Seconds: Additional loss of life caused by COVID-19

Researchers at Imperial College London are modelling the effects of COVID-19 on HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria patients, as their care is disrupted by the pandemic. Hospitals around the world have different capacities and protocols in place for dealing with the surge in COVID-19 patients, which affects the other patients who depend on hospital care. The study attempts to determine quantitatively how badly and how long-term these effects will be.

In this episode, I feature a paper by Yum and colleagues who demonstrated that optimizing grip requires managing the moisture levels in our finger pads. This is the mechanism through which we are able to perform many of our day-to-day activities like playing sports and even eating.

In this, the second video of the month, Dr. Cristancho opens our eyes to how individual ants express a caring behaviour towards other members of their colony! We know that other mammals care for each other (and us) but it is easy to think of insects as being machine-like. Dr. Cristancho demonstrates that this is not the case!

In this episode, Dr. Cristancho features the work from Dr. Muriel Brackstone on promoting and training an innovative surgical technique that allows for treating breast cancer while preserving the appearance of the breast as much as possible. It is called Oncoplastic Surgery and it is a great alternative in the quest to improve quality of life outcomes for breast cancer patients.
