There’s just something about the uniqueness and individuality of Appaloosa’s and paints that has always been dear to my heart. As a kid I used to call these speckled and patterned horses “kravovej kun”, which translates from Czech to mean “cow’s horse”. Every time we would drive by a paddock with one of these gorgeous horses I’d make sure to point them out to everyone in the car. They always drew me in. Their wild, uncompromising patterns, each unique to the individual, resonated with that little girl. And still does to this day.
And now that I get a chance to capture them with my camera, well, the feeling is sublime.

We both stood still for a moment. Enjoying the serenity of the autumn morning. I raised my camera, looking through the lens at the calm scene, focusing on the soft details of his eye. Each lash catching the light a little differently, the warmth of the iris highlighted by the kiss of the sun. A moment shared between us, the world stood still. And for a second in time, there was peace.

A few of my favourite shots from the photoshoot at Christy Steele’s farm here in Ontario on October 29, 2022.
The setting was like something out of a story book. The light was warm, the fog was just starting to lift, the autumn crisp was in the air and the horses and kittens were the perfect models. I was able to get some special shots of each of their unique beauty. I had to remind myself on concentrating on the task at hand and not to just cuddle all of them as they approached me with innocent curiosity.
