Title: Reconnection
“Reconnection” is a self-portrait series that explores the emotional and cultural impact of being separated from one’s environment. I grew up in Northern Ontario, where nature was not just a backdrop, but an essential part of everyday life. Since moving to Southern Ontario, I have experienced a growing sense of disconnection from that relationship.
Within my Indigenous culture, nature is deeply intertwined with identity, teachings and daily living. Being raised on a Reservation situated alongside a lake and within the Northern Ontario forest the land was a constant presence, guiding, grounding and shaping my understanding of the world. That connection was not something separate from life, it was life itself.
Through this series, I document my personal journey of returning to that connection. The images reflect feelings of disorientation, absence, and longing, alongside moments of clarity, peace, and reconnection. These self-portraits act as both an internal and external exploration, capturing my inner thoughts while physically placing myself back into the natural space.
By emphasizing the scale of the landscape in contrast to the human body, I aim to highlight both the overwhelming distance I have felt and the grounding presence nature continues to offer. Reconnection is ultimately a story of rediscovery of finding balance, identity and belonging through a renewed relationship with the land.
