“If you’re gonna feel blue, you might as well dress for it.”
The weekend’s weather may have put a damper on things, but the forecast is looking a little more promising. Fingers crossed we get a few more days of fall before winter makes itself too comfortable.
Either way, it’s a good reminder that being prepared beats being caught off guard. With snow on the ground and winter making its presence known, I’m happy to revisit a few clips from warmer fall days. Good friends, great places, and scenery that never gets old.
I can tell you one thing, if wishes could change the weather, I’d have a few.

“You learn by doing, and you get better by doing it again.”
There’s no substitute for getting down to work and learning as you go. From spring branding to fall roundup and weaning, the seasons come full circle, bringing familiar faces, good horses, and skill to work.
Watching a young cowgirl handle a calf with her horse is a good reminder that the next generation learns by being part of it. Her skill and experience improve one job at a time, with plenty of good company along the way.

There’s a certain kind of fall day that makes you glad you left the to-do list behind. Sunshine, water rolling over the rocks, and the scent of autumn floating on the breeze.
Fall has always been my favourite. Days like these are a big part of why, especially when the sun is shining and the wind has paused.

“The best part of potential is imagining what comes next.”
Fall is a fine time to walk through a group of weanlings and anticipate what the future holds. Each one has a personality, a presence, and a little something that makes you wonder what they’ll become.
These three caught my eye, standing in that golden grass along my aunt and uncle’s laneway. Two of them almost blend right into the fall colours. As most weanlings are, these three were inquisitive and playful.
I could hangout and watch a band of horses for hours, especially mares and foals.

“A little wilderness gives you a lot to be thankful for.”
There’s a reason I look forward to fall all year. The hills turn gold, the creek water runs cold, and the afternoon sun warms you to your core. The changing colours bring a whole new character to familiar places and the cologne of the backcountry is invigorating.

“Good taste isn’t something you grow into.”
This little cowboy already knows quality when he sees it. Uncle’s Twisted X boots, his favourite Smithbilt Hats lid from my collection, and a Filson backpack from our friends ELEMENTS OUTFITTERS.
Kruz has a slightly different take on the situation. That squint makes it pretty clear that nobody gets to help themselves to my gear without permission. Nobody, that is, except this little guy.
Can’t say I blame him. Some things are worth making an exception for.

It’s easy to get caught up chasing the next big thing, but there’s something to be said for recognizing what’s already right in front of you.
For me, it’s the people who make the miles worthwhile, the places that keep me exploring, and the partnerships that fuel my fire.
The older I get, the more I realize what a blessing it is to do what you love, with the right people, in places that never lose their wonder. I don’t take a minute of it for granted.

“A little sunshine can go a long way.”
Some of the best energy comes from simply getting a little more sun. For me, finding a quiet creek to pause in, mid-ride, is a pretty good way to recharge, especially when warm sunlight trickles through the pines.
No matter the season, a little sun does wonders for the soul. It’s a welcome reminder that even as the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, there’s still warmth left in the day, if you know where to find it.

“Not every masterpiece hangs on a wall.”
Some of the greatest works of art are far too big to bring inside. Towering peaks, rugged rock faces, and snow-dusted summits remind us how fortunate we are to roam in places like this. Even as the greens of summer fade, the Rockies never lose their ability to leave you in awe.
Some landscapes stay with you long after you’ve left them, and this is certainly one worth remembering. I’m grateful for the horses that carry us into these places and the gear that makes it enjoyable for us all.
