Today marks one year since we lost Mark Hiscock — and honestly, it still doesn’t feel real.
Mark wasn’t just a musician with Shanneyganock. He was a piece of Newfoundland and Labrador itself. The kind of person whose music didn’t just play in the background — it brought people together, filled rooms with life, and made you proud of where you’re from.
Over this past year, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about the impact he had — not just on the province, but on people like me personally. Mark is a big part of the reason I started promoting local Newfoundland and Labrador musicians. Seeing the way he carried our culture, supported the scene, and connected with people through music… it lit a fire in me to do my part to keep that going.
Because of him, I started sharing, supporting, and pushing local talent — trying to give even a fraction of the spotlight back to the kind of music and culture he represented so well.
His absence is heavy. You feel it in the quiet moments, in the songs that hit a little harder now, and in the spaces he used to fill so effortlessly. But at the same time, his presence is still everywhere — in every kitchen party, every live show, every time a Newfoundland song plays and people gather a little closer.
Mark left us with more than memories — he left a legacy. And for many of us, that legacy is something we’re still carrying forward every single day.
Gone way too soon, but never, ever forgotten.
