Although it is uncommon, every once in a while we hear reports of bear sightings in our area, especially in the spring when black bears are coming out of hibernation and searching for food. If you see a bear, do you know what to do? The Ontario Bear Wise website can help prepare you.
Some ways to reduce attracting bears include putting garbage in containers with tight lids, washing containers frequently to reduce odours and putting out garbage the morning of garbage collection and not the night before.
Report non-emergency encounters by calling the bear wise reporting line 1-866-514-2327.
Call 911 or your local police if a bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety and exhibits threatening or aggressive behaviour.
