🌿Let’s talk about long pauses in labor. Long pauses in the medical world are often viewed as a negative thing or better known as a “stalled” labour. This is because when in the hospital they want to keep labour moving.

🌿Pauses are not all bad, and in fact, there are normal pauses that happen with the ebb and flow of the labour process that are simply part of the process. For example, during the pushing stage there is often a pause before the fetal ejection reflex fully kicks in and baby begins to crown. This is really normal. There’s also a second pause that happens after babies head is born, before the body is born. These pauses are normal as the body gains its strength and waits for the next contraction to happen.

🌿There are other pauses that may occur throughout the labour process that are less common, but can be a sign that the body is tired, needs rest, needs nutrition or fluids, a position change, an environmental change like dimming the lights or something to boost the oxytocin levels.

🌿Pauses are not all bad. If we are aware of the pauses we can better be aware of what is happening in the body. The pauses can be signs and cues of what our body needs in the moment. Sometimes pauses can even indicate a circumstance or situation but more often than not pauses are part of the ebb and flow of labour and should not be feared.

🌿With pauses comes patience and trust in the process. If you are in the thick of labour and experience a very long pause between the next contraction don’t panic, ask yourself these questions:
👉🏼 Am I in early labour? If so irregular contractions are normal
👉🏼 Is my body fatigued? If so take a power nap and then get things going again
👉🏼 When was the last time you had a meal?
👉🏼 Are you dehydrated?
👉🏼 Did the environment just change? Did you just arrive at the hospital or people arrive at your home? If so the pause is normal.
👉🏼 Does your environment need adjusting? If so dim the lights, quiet voices, etc
👉🏼 Have you changed positions or notice a pattern with a certain position you are in? Do the contractions fade while in a certain position?
👉🏼 Are you feeling anxious, nervous or fearful?

🌿Labour makes you vulnerable

When it comes to labour you are more susceptible to being persuaded, to others opinions, to experiencing trauma due to being easily persuaded and you are vulnerable to your environment. This is simply because we are not in the right head space to have long conversations or always make hard decisions.

The reality is if an emergency happens you are at the hands of your care providers. This is why it’s so important to be mindful of your birth team and your location of delivery.

Things to can do to help prepare you ahead of time knowing that birth makes you more vulnerable:
👉🏼 find a trustworthy care provider who has similar values and will help you accomplish your goals even if it doesn’t align with their opinion
👉🏼 find a doula who can help support and educate you and your partner along the way
👉🏼 choose a birth space that you feel safe in
👉🏼 set boundaries for your birth space to help you feel safe
👉🏼 set boundaries for who may be in your birth space and have a clear outline of your wishes for your birth experience

✨Education is your weapon. Advocating is your superpower.✨

👉🏼When it comes to birth, education is so incredibly important. The days of winging it and going in blind are in the past. Some people may get lucky and this method might work but a lot of the times it doesn’t. Going in blind with the attitude of whatever happens will happen can set you up for a lot of not so great things.

🌿Now hear me out, there is a big difference between having an attitude of surrender to the uncontrollable ebbs and flow of labour and going in completely uneducated and vulnerable because you simply couldn’t be bothered to put in the time and work.

🌿It sounds harsh I know. But I mean it with all the love. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen this happen. How many times I’ve had midwives and OBs mention the same thing to me. People hire a doula and midwife and then don’t do any prep work expecting miracles to happen because they have a doula or midwife.

✨Education is like a weapon
👉🏼 it helps give understanding to the information
👉🏼 it helps you navigate various circumstances and situations
👉🏼 it helps you plan and prepare for different situations whether they be controllable or not
👉🏼 it helps you w**d out practices that’s not evidence based or old school
👉🏼 by having more knowledge you give yourself more options

👇🏼

✨ When you are educated you can also better advocate for yourself because you have better understanding.

👉🏼 advocating for yourself can help you navigate tricky situations
👉🏼 advocating for yourself can also help you achieve a more positive birth experience whether things go as planned or not.

🌿If you do anything before your birth, educate yourself. Take a good prenatal class.

🌿CHANGE YOUR PACE 🌿

When labour is slowing or contractions aren’t as consistent as they were try a change of pace. Remember your body knows what to do so work with your body.

🌿 Try a change of scenery if possible. Go for walk outside, go to a different room in your home, if you’re in the hospital this can be simply going to the bathroom which gets you up and moving into a different position.

🌿 Trade out support people. Get close with your partner. We know being close with your partner helps all the oxytocin flow.

🌿 Try a change of positions. Studies have shown that upright birth positions not only cut down on the time of labour but help keep labour moving.

🌿 Nourish your body. You wouldn’t run a marathon without nourishing your body well. Grab a class of water to rehydrate and have a snack packed with lots of good nutrients.

🌿 Give your body rest. People often think a stalled labour or slowly contractions is a bad thing but that’s not always the case. Sometimes our body needs rest and energy before it kicks things into high gear and will do this through slowly contractions or stalking labour. Often a short nap will do the trick.

🌿 Try a sensation change. This can be the use of a heated blanket or hot pack, sitting by the fire, getting in a warm bath or shower. If you are feeling warm try the opposite. Clench an ice cube in your hand, place a cool cloth on the base of your neck, turn on the fan, suck on an ice cube or popsicle.

🌿 Try a change in comfort measure options. Maybe you have using the yoga ball, using a peanut ball, the rebozo, the TENS machine, etc.

🌿 Changing your pace as you go can really help your body with the ebbs and flows of labour.

Your birth story is unique to you and your baby.

While I believe we can learn a lot from other birth stories I also believe it’s important to guard your mind and your heart as you get closer to your due date.

Remember your birth will be unique to you. It won’t be your friend’s birth, your mother’s birth or even your last birth. It can be encouraging to find hope in other people’s positive birth stories but it can also feed fear and anxiety if we are listening to traumatic stories at a time when we are vulnerable mentally and emotionally.

Be mindful of what you allow to settle into your heart and take space in your mind as you get ready to birth your baby.

Your journey is your own.

Mentally preparing for birth can set the tone of your birth experience. Your environment, external factors and physical health can all affect your emotional and mental state. Here are a few tips for mentally preparing for birth.

It is world mental health day! As a mama who struggled silently through postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety with my first baby and anxiety through my second pregnancy, I know how incredibly important your mental health is not just before pregnancy and during pregnancy but during your birth and postpartum.

👉🏼 The truth is we don’t talk about mental health in pregnancy, birth and postpartum enough.

👉🏼 Your mental health is your super power in pregnancy, birth & postpartum. It is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness.

👉🏼 Out mental health is ever changing with the life circumstances and situations we encounter. The things we encounter and go through leave us changed and transformed, especially birth.

👉🏼 Your mental health is a critical part of you thriving during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

If you are struggling with your mental health at any stage I encourage you to reach out to someone. Don’t walk through it alone. I know it can be scary to take that first step but it can be life changing to do so.

If you don’t know who to reach out to you can connect with your local life centres who often provide free services or reach out to for further support.

Ever wonder what your amniotic fluid is made of? Amniotic fluid is a fluid your body produces to help keep baby safe and protected. Like a built in pillow or airbag only it’s filled with water.

The fluid is made up of mainly water, urine from the baby once the baby is bigger, nutrients, antibiotics, hormones, cells, and more. Your baby swallows and “inhales” the fluid and then expels it again while in utero. Sounds gross right?

Well it’s the perfect recipe for your baby to keep them healthy and protected in there.
