🌿Let’s talk about long pauses in labor. Long pauses in the medical world are often viewed as a negative thing or better known as a “stalled” labour. This is because when in the hospital they want to keep labour moving.
🌿Pauses are not all bad, and in fact, there are normal pauses that happen with the ebb and flow of the labour process that are simply part of the process. For example, during the pushing stage there is often a pause before the fetal ejection reflex fully kicks in and baby begins to crown. This is really normal. There’s also a second pause that happens after babies head is born, before the body is born. These pauses are normal as the body gains its strength and waits for the next contraction to happen.
🌿There are other pauses that may occur throughout the labour process that are less common, but can be a sign that the body is tired, needs rest, needs nutrition or fluids, a position change, an environmental change like dimming the lights or something to boost the oxytocin levels.
🌿Pauses are not all bad. If we are aware of the pauses we can better be aware of what is happening in the body. The pauses can be signs and cues of what our body needs in the moment. Sometimes pauses can even indicate a circumstance or situation but more often than not pauses are part of the ebb and flow of labour and should not be feared.
🌿With pauses comes patience and trust in the process. If you are in the thick of labour and experience a very long pause between the next contraction don’t panic, ask yourself these questions:
👉🏼 Am I in early labour? If so irregular contractions are normal
👉🏼 Is my body fatigued? If so take a power nap and then get things going again
👉🏼 When was the last time you had a meal?
👉🏼 Are you dehydrated?
👉🏼 Did the environment just change? Did you just arrive at the hospital or people arrive at your home? If so the pause is normal.
👉🏼 Does your environment need adjusting? If so dim the lights, quiet voices, etc
👉🏼 Have you changed positions or notice a pattern with a certain position you are in? Do the contractions fade while in a certain position?
👉🏼 Are you feeling anxious, nervous or fearful?
